I have a 2000 Silverado 2500 4x4 with the 6 liter v8.
I was losing coolant slowly but couldn't find any puddles or evidence. Then I read that if your water pump is leaking from the seals you will typically see white, or light residue around the water pump. This is because the coolant touches the hot engine parts and basically evaporates immediately and leaves a white residue. There are several things I could have checked, but replacing the water pump was the most complete way to insure no further issues.... The part fit perfectly and I have had no issues in the last year since I installed it myself.... The hardest part is the draining of the existing fluids!

This was a warranty replacement for a pump purchased in 2012 that went bad after 20,000 miles. The first was absolutely OEM style but didnt last. This warranty replacement gives me even less confidence. It is not the same specification. The inspection cover on the back is pressed in not screwed on and the gaskets are not the OEM Oring type. Also there's no weep hole. The first one they sold me had all those features. Plus the casting itself is very rough compared to the first. Seems they may have switched to a cheaper vendor, and it shows.

  • Q:

Why does say its a good idea to replace the clutch fan when changing out waterpump?
    Asked on 1/2/2015 by ricky

    2 answers

    • A:

It says that because it's simply a generic recommendation. Ignore it when dealing with electric fans.

Answered on 10/21/2015 by Doug from Cedar Falls, IA
    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Good question Ricky! Yes, it is recommended to replace the clutch fan when replacing waterpump since the fan clutch and water pump share a common shaft. The chances are high that the operation of one will affect the operation of the other. If the fan clutch bearing wears out then the fan will wobble. The vibration from this wobbling fan blade will be transmitted to the water pump bearing which will cause it to wear out quickly. Likewise, a worn water pump bearing will cause the bearing in the fan clutch to wear out, due to the transmitted vibrations. If this water pump is replaced without replacing the fan clutch, then the worn fan clutch will cause the new water pump to fail. That's why it is very important that the water pump and fan clutch be replaced together.

What does "limited lifetime" warranty mean?
    Asked on 10/24/2014 by Tim

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

I'm glad to assist, Tim! The product with limited lifetime warranty can be refunded for cash/credit within the 90 days time frame. After that time expires, it can only be exchanged for a new item. So the warranty is valid for the life of the part as long as the customer owns the vehicle.

    • A:

This pump has a 2.05 diameter which is for the pre-2004 versions of the pump. So, this pump worked with the OE thermostat housing for my 2002 Suburban. This housing uses the O-ring that comes with the pump. The pump also comes with the thick paper gaskets that go between the pump and engine block. I used a thin coat of blue RTV on both sides of the paper gaskets.

  • Q:

Why do these pumps not have weep holes? What will happen to water that leaks past the seal? What then will be the early sign of failure?
Asked on 3/19/2013 by Dad from Charleston, SC

    2 answers

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The ToughOne or GMB New Water Pump - Part No. 130-7340 come with a bottom weep hole. To tell if a water pump is defective follow these steps: Check for shaft seal failure by carefully inspecting the water pump weep hole. When a water pump is new, some seepage is normal in the initial hours of operation as the seal seats. Other than that, any leakage that occurs is due to seal failure and the pump needs replacement. There may be tell tale trails of rust, calcium and coolant deposits on the water pump housing with the weep hole as the origin. Detect a worn water pump bearing by checking for side-to-side play at the shaft. There should be no perceptible play as you apply hand pressure to the shaft. Accelerated bearing wear is characterized by screeching or rumbling noises coming from the water pump housing. If any of these conditions exist, the bearing is worn out and the pump should be replaced. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
