Comments about CARQUEST New Water Pump:

My original pump was leaking pretty badly from the impeller shaft after 135K miles. Not the easiest job to do but if you take your time, its not that bad.

This pump looks just like the original, and once I had the old one off and the gasket surface cleaned up with emery cloth, it went right on, no problem. Good idea to smear a little sealer on the gasket first to help it stay on while lining up the pump with the bolt holes.

No leaks, and it runs really quiet and smooth. This was a great buy, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy this brand again. Might as well do the timing belt while you're in there, too.

Comments about CARQUEST New Water Pump:

I really can't find anything to complain about. It was a perfect fit, included the proper gasket, and is quiet. I replaced the OEM pump as a preventive measure after the integral trans cooler in my Neon failed. The shop manual for the Neon recommends coating the gasket in dialectric grease, so be sure to do that before installing. It helps keep the gasket in place while seating the pump. I was able to replace mine without pulling the rear timing cover or cam sprocket, but it was very tight working behind the rear cover.

Comments about CARQUEST New Water Pump:

I bought this water pump on the recommendation of other Neon enthusiasts. The product seems well built and came with the proper gasket and instructions. It mounted to my car with no trouble at all. It's quiet and seems to keep the water flowing, which is what it's designed to do, so I give it a thumbs up.

Like anything make sure the contact surfaces are clean and dry. I have used gmb waterpumps from trucks to volvos to any car so why pay more at a parts store for less warranty

The water pump can leak if it is going bad or has gone bad.

Look at lower radiater hose and check to see if its bad. If it's ok and you are still loseing water and you have a loud nose then yes your water pump is bad and will leak water. Mine is doing that now.

    • A:

Yes. My wife's 1996 Neon (DOHC) just had the water pump fail. She lost all the coolant in the system. Replacing the water pump on the SOHC Neon is a 2.4 hour job on the DOHC it is a 3.6 hour job. Since this is such a big job it is recommended that the timing belt that drives the pump also be replaced. Also on the first generation Neons (95-99) it is recommended that these both be changed at 60,000 mile intervals the second generations can change at 100,000 mile intervals. These engines are "interference engines," which means there's not enough clearance between the valves and pistons if the timing belt breaks so to drive until the timing belt does fail will cause serious damage to the engine.
