Carquest Brake Cleaner Brake Parts Cleaner: Chlorinated, Non-Flammable, 19 oz.

I used this product to clean the heavy oil and grease build up from a 4-speed Toploader transmission in a 1973 Mustang when I was replacing the clutch. It performed much better than the Purple Power water base degreaser I had purchased previously . The Purple Power left a greasy film on the parts after cleaning them but this stuff left no residue at all. I expected it to outperform the Purple Power and it did in a dramatic fashion. Be sure and scrape off any built up grease and dirt first from the parts being cleaned and then spray it down good with this stuff. Let it set for a few minutes and then use a parts cleaning brush and/or rags to wipe off the grease. This stuff does not evaporate very quickly which makes it a better product for general parts degreasing than it does for brake cleaning. I does evaporate at a controlled rate which I liked. i did use it on a drum brake repair on the same car and it worked wonderfully there as well. I have read complaints that it doesn't evaporate quickly enough but It was only a matter of minutes before it did. It's not like it takes an hour. It evaporates within 10 minutes or so when sprayed on a part. Also, the 19 or 20 ounce can (I don't remember which it was) goes a good bit farther than the standard 14 ounce cans in which other products are sold. I used almost 3 full cans on this transmission alone, which I felt was a very reasonable amount (I purchased 6 cans in anticipation of using a lot of it). Be sure not to use it in a small enclosed space or the odor may bother some people. I used it in a large 2-car garage and only left a one inch gap at the bottom of one of the doors for ventilation and it was sufficient but its odor may affect everyone differently.

This chlorinated version is best used as a degreaser, and NOT a brake cleaner for new parts. On new rotors, pads, drums, etc... it takes FOREVER to dry off. Ended up wiping everything down with a paper towel, then spraying again, then waiting a while and wiping off again. Must be because of the chlorinated format or possibly because it says "non-flammable"? Better off trying a non-chlorinated version or a name brand spray that you know and trust, or some kind of "regular" brake cleaner.
