I've used this brand of rebuilt alternator before (same model number, even, on similar Subarus). I've always found them to work flawlessly. I highly recommend it.

Product in wife's car.First part failed intermittently.Thusly, due to poor return policy, was difficult to return.Could have stranded wife or done further damage. All defective units should be completely reconditioned. The first unit had some original parts left and second didn't.Indicates to me that it arrived and left the recon facility with same problem.Quality control could use some help.

Comments about CARQUEST Alternator - Remanufactured - 85 Amps:

Whoever rebuilt this alternator, failed to check the soundness of the threads in the lower mounting bracket built in to the alternator case. Those threads were damaged, and failed to hold the lower mounting bolt.
Luckily, I had a stock of long bolts on hand, slightly under the outside diameter of the original, so I was able to securely mount the alternator, and get back on the road. There are quality control issues, with this parts rebuilder.

Comments about CARQUEST Alternator - Remanufactured - 85 Amps:

I am currently restoring this vehicle to give it to my daughter so that she can have reliable transportation and I noticed that the alternator was not putting out enough electronic power to maintain all the standard features of the car operating normally. Then I decided to replace the alternator from Advance because this was going to bring the power to what the normal power was supposed to be in first place. The best thing was that I shopped around and the only store that had it in stock was the Advance on highway 84 here in Hinesville, Ga. I purchased on line and I called and the store manager Mr. Carlos said yes you can come to pick up your order now! I rushed to the store and picked up the alternator, went home and installed it on the car, and I performed the function checks on it and felt completely satisfied with this top of the line product. It looked and performed as a brand new one.

                • Q:

I installed this alternator in my 99 Subaru Legacy yesterday afternoon as a replacement for the original unit from the car. Upon starting the engine after installation, a whine started coming from what I assume is the alternator since the engine didn't make the noise before and the alternator was the only thing that changed. As I took it out for a test drive, the whine got quieter as I went on and now does not make much noise past 2k RPM or so but still is rather noticeable at idle speeds. My question is this: should I keep going on this unit and see if the whining quits altogether, keep driving even with the whine because the noise is normal for this brand, or should I consider this a lemon and return it for replacement? The unit itself charges perfectly well with no lights or symptoms indicating otherwise. It's my understanding that bearings on rebuilt alternators sometimes make noise from the factory for a while, but I thought I'd post my problem on here in case someone knows more.

That's a great question! I understand your concern with your alternator whining. Are you sure that the whining is coming from the alternator? When you replaced the alternator was the serpentine belt (Part No. 5050345) replaced as well? A great way to check is with a can of belt conditioner, Part No. 05350, spray the belt according to the directions to see if the noise is the belt or the alternator.

if your battery was really dead an alternator will whine for a while if not then i would recommend a replacement
