This BWD Switch - Ported Vacuum - part# EC919 controls the EGR effectively and reduces the amount of harmful gasses released into the atmosphere. In addition, it also cools the combustion temperature for efficient engine performance. • Q:

what would be the proper way to remove and install the ported vacuum switch on a 1978 chverolet impala 305 5.0L 2bl ohv 8cyl?
Asked on 7/3/2012 by OGER from LAS VEGAS NV

    1 answer

EGR valves on older vehicles manufactured before 1981 are operated according to the amount of vacuum created by the engine under different operating conditions. These units have a vacuum hose attached to them which connects to the intake manifold and provides the ported vacuum necessary to operate the valve. As the throttle is opened more vacuum is created, which causes the valve to open and introduce exhaust gases into the intake manifold. These early EGR systems also used a thermal switch (Ported Vacuum switch) which prevented the vacuum from operating the EGR valve until the engine reached normal operating temperature. As the replacement of this part involves professional assistance I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto store and one of our representatives will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
