The only tool that finally worked

I tried several other tools and used this tool (and a little heat) as a last resort. It popped the ball joint out in a snap.

Comments about AutoCraft Ball Joint Separator:

It worked. As the repair manuals and other users say, if you don't want to damage the boot, don't use this tool.

Worked perfectly for knocking my ball joints and outer tie rods loose. Worked so well my 10 year old daughter can use it. Also makes a nice little pry bar. Better price than the ones at harbor freight.

Comments about AutoCraft Ball Joint Separator:

The length gives you good leverage and ability to hit. The end is starting to flare out used it for 2 ball joints and 2 tie rod ends. Glad it has a lifetime warranty.

Wasn't fancy, but did the job of separating the upper ball joint on my Ford F-150. It took a beating, but the joint came apart with this tool.

How do you use this? just pound it in between the joint and frame?

                A:

Instructions: 1. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Place a floor jack under the front frame rail on the side of the vehicle where the ball joint is to be removed. Loosen the wheel lugs on the wheel one turn with a lug wrench. Raise the floor jack. Place a jack stand under the frame rail. Finish removing the wheel lugs and the wheel. 2. Remove the cotter pin from the castle nut on the underside of the ball joint to be removed with pliers. Remove the castle nut in a counterclockwise direction with a socket and breaker bar. 3. Insert the tapered open end of the upper arm of a four-way ball joint separator in between the ball joint and the suspension control arm at the ball joint stud. 4. Operate the lower arm of the separator. Remove the center bolt at the pivot point of the separator and move the lower arm to the next hole in the tool if the gap between the ends of the two arms is too far apart for the adjustment screw to operate. Replace the center bolt. Note that the ends of the upper and lower arms of separator should be in close proximity together. 5. Turn the adjustment screw on the upper arm of the separator until it comes into contact with the lower arm. Continue turning the nut with a wrench in a clockwise direction until the ball joint separates from the suspension control arm. 6. Loosen the adjustment screw and slide the separator away from the ball joint to remove it. • Q:

Will this separator tool work on a 98 Subaru Legacy ball joint b/c the ball joint is relatively small and this fork has a 15/16" opening? Seems like the other fork offered for tie-rod end joints w/ 21/32" opening might be a better fit/choice.
