This seal is easy enough to install once all of the major mechanical battles are won to gain access to the crankshaft output where the seal is located. After all that work and a perfect install, the seal still leaked a bit and I was ready to set the van on fire and collect the insurance money. Surprisingly, after one day of driving the vehicle around town and a few short highway excursions the leak stopped completely! I suspect the reason is that this seal is a "reverse inward facing lip" design and the original seal has a standard outward facing lip. This means that the new seal's sealing lip is riding on a new and "virgin" area of the crankshaft. There was likely some varnish buildup on this area of the crankshaft which required some run time for the new seal to lap itself in for a good seal or maybe the seal needs time to lap-in regardless of the circumstances? I don't know for sure but it was installed exactly per the manufactures instructions which calls for completely dry and lube free surfaces, the use of the included installation sleeve, and seating to the specific mounting depth with the very expensive installation tool.

Whenever I replace a bearing or bushing I do all related parts as well. This seal would not work if the bushing was worn but in this case I did not wish to remove the tail shaft of the transmission. I will keep an eye on the seal for leakage and if it drips that I will go for the bushing too. If it not broken I won't fix it. After I installed the seal and inserted the yoke I checked for excessive movement and was satisfied that is was not in excess so all should be well. This was installed in a 1964 Chevelle with 87000 miles on 8/2014 replacing the original factory seal. Let's see how the new one does.

This is the correct fit rear extension housing seal for my 1969 FMX transmission in my 1969 Mercury Cougar. Finding the seal with the bushing is a plus as the bushing generally shows some wear after many years. Great price as well.
