tips about using this coil with points If your distributor is running points you need to add a resistor, even ones marked 12v because none of them (the less expensive ones) actually output 9v. They are not labeled correctly. This was debated on a racing forum and the input was from an engineer that actually worked on coils. The coils saying they can run at 12v means they can survive (for a while) without overheating, it does not mean the points will not burn. Most Fords have the resistor already in the wiring harness, the pink wire from the ignition switch. For a Ford 2.8L that I converted to points (1974? Pinto specs) I used an external BWD RU19. I saw some other reviews where the coil failed, as stated by the above referenced engineer, the quality is lower and they are no longer made in the USA. That being said, this is the best round coil you can buy in the under $75 class. Heat will kill this coil, the same with vibration. Do not mount it opposite or over headers. FWIW: Mine has lasted two years (with the above resistor) with occasional use on a Bronco II driven mostly on road.
