The Ignition Contact Set is used in older vehicle applications to ground the ignition coil primary circuit and create the high secondary voltage required in the ignition process. Connected to the contact set is a condenser designed to absorb the high voltage spike created when the contact set opens.

An Ignition Capacitor is a device that will absorb excessive voltage spikes in electrical systems. The typical location or use for a capacitor is inside a distributor tied into a point ignition system. The distributor cap & rotor are just two pieces of this type of ignition system which is typically driven by the engine’s camshaft.
