The gas-charged lift supports that raise and hold up hoods, hatches and trunk lids are going to wear out over time - it's just a fact of life. This is another installation job you can do yourself with a few basic tools. Replacing faulty lifts, latches and handles is an easy way to make your car safer, and we have products from StrongArm, ACDelco, Dorman and Keystone to help you do just that.
The struts (lift supports) that hold up your hood, trunk lid or hatch aren't a whole lot different from the design of a shock absorber, with a steel rod that telescopes into a gas- or fluid-filled tube. Over time the gas-charge in the lift support bleeds down and becomes weak and insufficient to safely support the hood or hatches. The good news is that replacing the struts is an easy job that doesn't even require tools. If your trunk lid or hood won't stay up, go ahead and get the lift supports you need and put that baseball bat or pool cue back to work doing what it's designed for!
