The advent of computerized engine controls in the 80s meant the Check Engine light (CEL) on the dash alerted drivers to potential problems. An illuminated CEL means that a sensor or a system on the engine has registered a reading that's out of normal operating spec, and the engine computer has stored a trouble code.
When the CEL is illuminated, a technician can attach a code reader tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port and read the trouble codes stored in the computer.
