This was a simple fix for a problem that was just weird. My battery would some times go dead and was not charging and sometimes would charge. When testing the alternator first time around it showed good, and after several more checks it was good and bad. Took less than 15mins to replace.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN P/N # R731 AND R731P VOLTAGE REGULATOR , PICTURE PARTS LOOK IDENTICAL EXCEPT IN PRICE .
I HAVE A 88 FORD AEROSTAR 3.0 WITH FRONT FACTORY AC , INSTALLED A NEW BATTERY ABOUT A MONTH AND NOTICE WHILE DRIVING DAYTIME WITH LOW HEADLIGHT ON AND USING AIR BLOWER MODE KNOB HEATER TOWARD MAX RED INDICATOR , THE VOLTAGE GAUGE INDICATOR WOULD STAY DOWN ON 1/4 , WHEN SWITCHING HEADLIGHT AND HEATER KNOB OFF , THE POINTER INDICATOR WOULD STAY BACK IN THE MIDDLE ( VAN IS @ 45 MPH ) IS THIS NORMAL DUE TO DC CONSUMPTION ?Asked on 10/6/2012 by AL from United States1 answer

The Voltage Regulator by BWD Fuel Injection Electronics - Part No. R731 have a riveted circuit board for long life and reliable performance. They also have a clear finish on the cover and base to resist corrosion build-up, for long life compared to the R731P. The image displayed on both the parts represents only the R731 and not the R731P. With respect to the other issues I would recommend that you check the alternator as well. As the battery is new in your 1988 Ford Aerostar 3.0, it should be an issue with the voltage regulator or the alternator. You just need an accurate voltage meter. Connect the meter to the poles of the battery. Start the engine and avoid spinning her up, even not for a short moment. The reading of the meter now can be anything; a reading lower than 12.6 volt indicates a weak battery. Slowly increase the engine speed. The meter reading should increase too, but will get "catched" at an engine speed somewhere at 1000 rpm. From then on the reading will stay "locked". It should be 13.8V; 0.5V higher or lower is the limit of what is acceptable. A voltage too high is NOT good: it will ruin your battery and wear out bulbs and other equipment. A voltage regulator is good when the reading hardly reacts to change of engine speed or to adding power consumers like electric window heaters or main headlights.Answered on 3/26/2012 by Vincent from AAP
