I have been unable to get my 2005 Chrysler 300 out of park for over a year now! It would go into park, but wouldn't come out. In order to take it out of park, I would have to carry a screw driver with me wherever I drove, and use that to move the cable to the left in order to get the car out of park. If this doesn't make sense, Google shift interlock park cable and you will see the YouTube video on how to perform this handy fix! But in order to park, I would have to leave the car in neutral with the parking brake applied. After contacting Chrysler over this issue three times, I finally gave in and decided to order the replacement part and put it in myself. (I am a female by the way who works with computers, not on cars!!!!) I searched the internet on how to perform the replacement and with the help of a male friend, we were able to replace this part in three hours. Now that we know what we are doing, we are thinking about advertising on [...] to replace it for others. We figure we can now replace this shift interlock part in one hour or less! Thanks Chrysler for not owning up to the fact that although my car was not made on a certain day at a certain plant and does not have the correct VIN to qualify for a replacement shifter it really does have the same issues as the cars you have been recalling! Now that's what I call Customer Service!!!!! NOT!!!!

2005 Chevy Aveo LS
my car will not come out of park and the ignition key will not come out.
what I did is used a spare key put in the key slot in front of the shifter marked trans unlock, this let me get it out of park,to were I can drive the car, now when I turn key off, the key is still in ignition cannot turn off completely. will stop engine running will not turn the second notch back to remove key.
looking on line trying to trouble shoot problem yesterday, what I found was called a BTIS Brake Transmission/Transaxle Interlock Solinoid. Also I am trying to find out were the parts is located, I am thinking it is in the steering column.Asked on 8/20/2012 by bubba from Mineola Texas1 answer

The Brake Transaxle Shift Interlock (BTSI) Solenoid in your 2005 Chevrolet Aveo LS is located on the steering column under the support bracket. It has two wires on it. You may get some extra clearance by removing the shift knob. This may not be needed, but simplifies the replacement process. To remove the shift knob, rotate the silver ring on the bottom of the knob about a half turn. Then, when it loosens, pull up on the knob. There are three screws holding the console in place - two on each side near the front and one under the coin dish at the rear (remove a plastic tab to get to it). Pull up on the park brake. Remove the leatherette cover - it unclips and slides over the shift lever (if you've removed the knob). This exposes the adjustment nut. You will probably have to back off the brake to get the console over the lever. Count the threads showing before you back it off - so you can restore it to the safe setting when you put things back together. Back the nut off until it allows the brake handle to go almost vertical. Now lift the console off the shift assembly and set it aside. You will have to reach under and unclip the wire that connects to the cigar lighter power jack. There is a tab you squeeze to unlock it. There are four bolts that hold the shift assembly to the floor. Remove them. Carefully lift the shift assembly off the floor and lay it on its left side. This will expose the screws that hold the solenoid in place. Remove them and lift the old solenoid off the shift assembly. Put the new solenoid in place and screw it in place. Turn the shift lever onto the other side. You will need to partly remove the black shift bezel (the part that surrounds the lever) in order to get the old switch out of its hole. The bezel is held in place with metal clips. Very carefully pull the bezel back about 1/2". That should give enough clearance to pull the switch out. If the tabs are broken the switch will come out easily. If not - you may have to slide a blade alongside to retract the switch. Put the new one in its place. Yes, the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator and the Shift Interlock Latch are same. The brake shift interlock uses an electronic actuator to prevent the gear shifter from moving out of “Park” without the ignition on and the brake pedal pressed. The Shift Interlock Latch locks the Shifting Mechanism into park, when released the vehicle can be shifted out of park.Answered on 5/4/2012 by Dennis from AAP
