With reference to your inquiry on the BWD Throttle Position Sensor - part# EC3045, the throttle position sensor on your 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT would be located on the opposite side of where the throttle cable turns the throttle plate on the throttle body. I have a 2000 Monte Carlo ss with a 3.8 v-6...I have a power surge between 1700 -2200 RPM , If I get past that RPM range it runs fine or if I accelerate hard it runs fine also. I have put a new Mass Air Flow Sensor and a new Map sensor in along with plugs , wires and fuel filter and it still does it , any ideas would be great.

          A:

The throttle position sensor may be the problem. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.

Yes, a bad idle air control valve may cause the throttle position sensor to go bad. However, I would suggest you to have a proper diagnosis from a certified mechanic to avoid intermittence.

You could have a check engine light, transmission shift issues, bucking and jerking, idle surging, engine cutting off, hesitation when taking off, surge while cruising down the highway. There are many possible symptoms. You could have any one or any combination of symptoms, or even no symptoms at all except a check engine light.

      • Q:

I have a 1996 Buick regal 3.8 cc V8 engine. It idles high even in the summer upon start up and can take up to 30 miles before it idles down. The only way to idle down is to turn the engine off and restart. It may take up to 3 tries to accomplish this. In the winter it is worse. Would a faulty throttle position sensor cause this.

      • Q:

96 Camaro 3.8 at times it misses and cuts out and runs very bad when giving the car any gas or taking off or trying to accelerate. Scan showed a code of 102 (MAF). Replaced (MAF). Still runs bad!!! STill shows code of 102. Could it be the TPI and show a code for MAF. Or be the EGR and show a code for MAF. Had different car once that run just like this and it was the EGR.
Every one in while the car runs correctly.. but most of the time not. I cruises fine... but once you attempt to give it gas it stumbbles and jerks untill you let up on the gas. Please help.

Unfortunately we are unable to diagnose what is wrong with your vehicle without being able to be there with your vehicle. We highly recommend taking your vehicle to a reputable shop to have them take a look at it to determine the cause.

WHAT DOES THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR DO? ARE WHAT DOES IT CONTROL ON ENGINE?
Asked on 5/22/2010 by WILLARD from HAMPTON, GA.

        • CUSTOMER CARE

          A:

A throttle position sensor (TPS) is a sensor used to monitor the position of the throttle in an internal combustion engine. The sensor is usually located on the butterfly spindle so that it can directly monitor the position of the throttle valve butterfly. The sensor is usually a potentiometer, and therefore provides a variable resistance dependent upon the position of the valve (and hence throttle position). The sensor signal is used by the engine control unit (ECU) as an input to its control system. The ignition timing and fuel injection timing (and potentially other parameters) are altered depending upon the position of the throttle, and also depending on the rate of change of that position.
