longer than original cable. if you don't change both at one time, all the stress is on the shorter original

There are minor differences between the 38521 and the OEM parts I was replacing on my 1998 Dodge Dakota. When I did the replacement, I replaced BOTH sides. The problem was that the top part of cable would not lie flat and would tilt at an angle. This made it impossible to close the gate. I was able to close the gate only after adjusting the top part of the cables by pushing them to one side.
The OEM parts are sold by Dodge specifically as RH and LH parts 55174826AC and 55174827AC while the Dorman part is supposedly interchangeable. There must be a reason why Dodge sells this as 2 specific parts and I think I found out why.
