Finally had to replace the orginal starter. 14 years for the original starter on my 98 f-150 4.6l. If the reman starter lasts 1/2 that time it is still a good bargain plus the 15% online discount. I have used World Wide starters on several other vehicles and those are still working after 6 years. The hardest part of this starter is getting to the top bolt on a 98 F-160 4.6L engine. Best way to get to bolt is go thru in thru the wheel well. Remove the wheel well skirt and you can get the top bolt out/in much easier than laying under the truck and searching blindly for the bolt.

This starter replaces the original on a 1997 Ford F150 4.6 liter engine 4X4 Off Road Package. The original starter motor was still good but the solenoid was bad, had been failing in the usual manner due to grounding issues, corroded wire, etc. (common Ford problem with the spade type connector that they installed a fix for). Because I had banged the heck out of it and dummied up the solenoid a few times I thought I would treat the truck to a fresh NEW starter.
The design is great and the fit is perfect. When I bench tested it, it was loud but spun like a champ. The solenoid avoids the overtorque problems by giving you a pickup wire pre attached to the board and equipped with a crimp end covered in a heat shrink tubing. Excellent finish and attention to detail overall.
First start made the most unholy racket almost like the gear had spun, but the engine fired right up, so I shut it down and tried again. Many attempts later, I still get a loud noise when starting but I have come to realize that it is the high torque motor itself. Also, the starter gear seems to spin a bit after the truck fires (winds down for a second or two).
So the jury is out and i guess only time will tell. I sort of wish I had just changed the solenoid and had the whisper quiet start I came to expect. The new one woke my daughter up at 5 AM this morning when I started it. Oh well....

Comments about Worldwide Starter:
I read some negative comments about this starter but went ahead and purchased it anyway figuring Advance sells thousands of these so most of them must be ok. My new starter is great! Works perfectly and is just as quiet as the original. After two weeks I have nothing but praise for this reman unit. Hint: get the notoriously difficult top bolt off on F150 starter by removing passenger side tire and using a socket with a 6 in extension, a universal joint and a 12 in extension joined together.

Careful not to overtighten the nut that holds the signal wire on - I learned the hard way that you can break the housing if you overtighten.

I went out and bought a new Bosch starter since this was the second one I received from advance auto. The first one they gave me a hard time taken it back. I still have to take this one back...tho I'm dreading doing so.
