The original fan relay failed on my wifes 98 Chrysler Town & Country minivan at 225k miles & 14 yrs. I bought a BWD replacement relay at my local Advance store and installed it. It worked fine for 8 days then it failed. The radiator fans stopped coming on again. I took it back to the store and they promply replaced it. The 2nd relay failed after 3 days, this one would turn the fans on randomly, sometimes after parking the van overnight, the fans would be running the next morning. I took that one back and got a third one. It lasted 11 days then failed to turn the fans on again. I gave up, got my money back. I went to the local pull-apart yard and got a used Chrysler one for $3.00. It has been working correctly for the last 7 months.

Just 2 screws to install, but the location is terrible! Use a light! I installed it first after I had removed the cooling fans assembly (one fan was wearing out) & this gave me more room to complete the installation without removing the headlight. Then I installed the cooling sensor. Everything's working! Tah-dah! 1999 Town/Country

Open cirquit in relay.Fan ran continuously.Returned same day for exchange.no other BWD,so went with cheaper Dorman.Worked great for five days,then died.Got refund and went to higher end parts store for relay.Has been working fine for three weeks now.Always get my parts at Advance,but this one was a bust.Great hassle free service from counter personel.Sure glad someone before me had cut out headlight suurround.

THANK GOODNESS THE PREVIOUS OWNER CUT OUT BEHIND THE HEADLIGHT!!! Still had to unscrew it which was a bit of an adventure!! Used brute force to remove!! Other than that it was easy.

Reason for purchase...overheating when stopped.
After removing the rightside headlight. Cut a access hole to install. I used a large drill bit and a hand held hacksaw blade to remove the plastic. Very easy.
After removing the old relay, Just to make sure that it was the relay I used a continuity meter to check the electric fan. Pin 1 and 3 showed the fan winding still good. Replaced relay and it was good to go. No problems so far with new relay..fingers crossed it will last as long as org.

I have an 03 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 Litre six. I replaced the coolant temp sensor and the fan still never turns on. I found what looks like the relay mounted near the right fender Below the battery and two mounting bolts with a two wire plug. Doesn't look like what is in the Advance auto pictures but then what Advance seems to offer is the relay plus a pigtail and some wire splices. Help?Asked on 5/7/2012 by Steve from Export, Pa.1 answer

This BWD Relay (Part No. R4736) is the exact fit for your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 4.0L. Please check the ground wire from the PCM. If you don't get ground when the temp rises above 210, check to see if there's a ground on that wire right at the PCM. If there is, you have got a break in the wire between the PCM and the relay. If not, you have either got a bad connection from the temperature sensor or a bad PCM. A:
The radiator fan relay on your Jeep Gand Cherokee should be located behind the left front headlight. The Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) cooling fan relay is located below the right headlamp behind the bumper fascia. Remove front bumper and grill assembly. Remove 1 support bolt near front of reservoir. Remove 2 reservoir mounting bolts. Remove reservoir from vehicle to gain access to vacuum hose. Disconnect vacuum hose from reservoir fitting at rear of reservoir. Disconnect electrical connector at relay. Remove 2 relay mounting bolts and remove relay. For installing, position the relay to body and install 2 bolts. Tighten bolts to 3 N.m (25 in. lbs.) torque. Connect electrical connector to relay. Connect vacuum hose to reservoir. Install reservoir and tighten 2 bolts to 3 N.m (25 in. lbs.) torque. Install front bumper and grill assembly. The only other way to do it is to remove the right headlamp assembly and cut out a section of the hard black plastic directly under the area that the headlamp assembly would sit. Now you can see the relay. Remove the bolts holding the relay in place pull it up through the hole you just made and disconnect it from the wire harness. This is how the dealership replaced it on my 2003 Laredo to the tune of 300 bucks the first time. When it went out again, I found a video on YouTube that showed how to replace it for 50 dollars. When I took the front right headlight out, there was a nice hole cut in the plastic right above the relay. The code P1491 is for the cooling fan relay control circuit. Start by checking the fuse for the fan relay. It is in the box under the hood, a 40 amp fuse. I have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee Grand. I am wondering if I need a relay or relay switch. I am told these are 2 different parts even though when I research these parts, the names are used interchangeably. My fan motor does not cut off when the car is turned off unless the relay is pulled from the relay compartment on top and then it does not work at all of course. Which do I need? I believe there are a couple relays that are the same, swap relays to narrow down the problem. Make sure you mark the fan relay in case it is bad.
