A:
Yes. A bad cap can cause the engine to overheat if it loses its ability to hold pressure in the cooling system. You can get a radiator cap tester to check it.Answered on 4/16/2011 by 1 SicVic from Southern NJA:
You could use a pressure tester to check it but it's so inexpensive you could just replace it with the recommended pressure.
As to your question, if it is not holding the correct pressure the boiling point of the coolant could be too low which *MAY* lead to overheating, especially if it is hot and you're running the AC. If for some reason it doesn't relase at the right pressure (I haven' seen it so this is hypothetical) I imagine the system could overpressure. Most likely it would break a seam on the radiator or damage the seal on the water pump.Answered on 4/17/2011 by Zeke from Bloomington, IL
