The Rack and Pinion gear set is a simple mechanism that enables you to efficiently steer your car. You’ll find the pinion gear at the end of the steering shaft. Once the steering wheel turns, this gear spins and moves the rack, which turns the wheels. The shafts on which the rack and pinion are attached meet OEM specifications; premium-quality bearings help to deliver a smoother steering experience. Valve housing has polished micro-finish sleeving for durability. OEM-grade O-rings and seals meet required specifications. Factory computer-tested.

Can't know if it's defective till you install and drive. 3 hours to remove AND install new one! With one person! At least in a grand am.

On the few vehicles that I have replaced these on, it really was not that hard. They required a hammer, and a socket and ratchet set. You just need to remove the few bolts holding it to the car, remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles, and then re-install everything. I highly recommend consulting a mechanic who can look at your car first just to make sure there is not anything special about your car and once the repairs are made get a four wheel alignment just to make sure nothing was thrown off in measurements.Answered on 2/1/2010 by Mike from Advance Auto Parts
