The engineering that went behind the install of this pump is terrible. You have to pull the pulley off the pump while it's installed in the vehicle to get the pump off the mounting bracket. The bolts that hold the pump onto the bracket can't be spun off with the pulley installed, so you can't remove the pump without pulling the pulley.
So that requires a special puller/installer tool that can be purchased seperately. Some pumps can fight you the whole way while you're removing the pulley, and you don't really have a great amount of room to do it, especially if you have Airconditioning.
I'd recommend replacing all of the lines when you do a pump replacement, especially if you live in the east and have salt on the roads because the lines rot out pretty bad.
Before you install the pulley back on the new pump, take some emery cloth or light sand paper and clean up the inner diameter of the pulley. Also, use lubrication to put the pulley on the new pump. I used anti-seize. It goes on much better/easier that way, if you don't do it, you could potentially damage the shaft surface, or it'll just be a difficult pulley install. DO NOT hammer the pulley back on the pump. YOU'LL DAMAGE the bearings.
If you don't have the tool or you don't have alot of patience for doing a job that can potentially "bust em off on ya" then I'd recommend you have a friend or mechanic that knows how to do it perform the removal and install of this pump.
It took me 2-3 hours to replace the pump, all of the lines, and cooler, but I could do it in half the time after having stuggled with this first install.
Bottom line, it's not an easy install, you need special tools to do it or you can damage the pump and the pulley in removal and installation.

Ford didn't have a better idea with the design of this pump. I would not advise a DIY install unless you have some automotive experience and patience. My vehicle is a 95 Ranger 2.3 engine w/o air. It took me 2 hours to install this pump. It is impossible to remove the old pump without removing the pulley first and it has to be done on the truck because the three attaching bolts won't clear the pulley. A special puller is required to remove the pulley, as this pulley is a press fit. In my case I got a puller from Advance through the loan a tool program for a nominal fee and when the tool is returned you get a full refund on your deposit, saves you the added expense of purchasing a puller that you may only use once. I think it is a great idea on their part.
When removing the pulley on my truck I found it easier to just remove the radiator to provide additional clearance when using the puller. It may sound like more work but saved me time and made the job alot easier. I would suggest replacing the lines along with the pump to save you headaches down the road. That is what I did.
When you re-install the pulley make sure you clean the inside diameter first ,use a lubricant on the pulley and lube the pump shaft. In this kit you get a nut, bolt, and washer to press the pulley back onto the shaft. Do NOT use a hammer or you will damage the pump!
I have used and purchased many Cardone products over the years and never had a problem with the quality of their products. The problem with this part is the car manufacturer and design. Very poor design .

Comments about Fenco Power Steering Pump:
Worked very well. No complaints. Thoroughly bled system and pump was quiet from the start.Once I filled reservior, I checked a couple days later and topped off. No problems. Ford design is only problem having to take pulley off before removing and putting back on after installing.

Comments about Fenco Power Steering Pump:
I had to replace the AC clutch, which required the removal of the power steering pump. Figured since it was out I would replace it since it was the original one and was 13 years old with 225,000 miles on it. It was also making a little noise. The new one makes a ton of noise. The instructions warned that it would be noisy for the first 500 miles as it broke in, so I decided to give it some time. Yeah, it got a little less noisy, but after 2,000 miles it is still noisier than the old pump, and by far. The only good thing is that it seems to be doing everything else fine. On a 13 year old Taurus with 225,000 miles, I am not going to lose too much sleep about the noise, but it does bug me every once in a while.

Comments about Fenco Power Steering Pump:
The only complaint I have is the idiot engineers at Ford who decided to put the a/c hoses right in front of the pulley you have to take off to change the pump. [*] Other than that, pump works great! [...] after about an hour and a hand from my son, the car was up and going.

Q:
The reservoir cap from my original Ford pump does not provide a snug fit on Fenco unit. The "thread" on the reservoir which provides the tightening is narrower on the Fenco unit than it is on the Ford unit, thus the Ford cap wont tighten on the Fenco unit. Where can I get a cap that properly fits the new Fenco unit? Does it matter if it's not air-tight?1 answer

Could be that the pump is bad or it is just low on fluid.A:
Normally the noise is caused by air entering the system or air has not been removed properly after a power steering component has been changed. Ford power steering pumps are known to make more noise than other manufacturers due to the design of the pump.If all the air is removed from the system verify the noise against another vehicle of the same type, if the noise is consistant no other action is required. If it is considerably louder than the pump may have been damaged from not removing all the air from the system and will need to be replacedQ:

If you haven't already figured it out, you need to get a special pulley remover and installer kit. You can find this kit online pretty much anywhere. Just make sure that the tool will meet your needs as some tools may vary in design and my not work for your vehicle. When you put the pulley back on the new pump, don't hammer it on or you'll destroy the bearings in the pump. You can read my review of the cardone pump for Ford Ranger for more info on how to do it.CUSTOMER CARE
A:
Removing the pulley usually requires the right size socket and and air gun, if these tools are unavailable to you, visit your local Advance Auto Parts store and they will do it for free for you.A:
On a 1997 V-6 model, you must remove the pully prior to removing the pump from the bracket and use a pully tool, not a socket.
