Actron Pocket Scan Plus OBD II Code Reader
The Pocket Scan Plus automatically reads Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) when connected to the diagnostic connector. The tool will erase DTCs, read and erase pending DTCs and display freeze frame data and the vehicle VIN number.

Does the job and can pay for itself by avoiding garage fees. You'll have to look up the codes' meanings on a computer, though.
I had a staggered idle on my Ford Escape whicj eventually led to my 'check engine' light turning on. By using this to grab the codes and looking them up, I managed to save at least $100.00 in garage labor. The code pointed to the EGR, and with further searching on the 'net, I found that cleaning it was all that was needed, saving $50.00+ for a replacement part.
After the repair was made, it was simple to use the scanner to turn off the 'check engine' light, and a test drive confirmed that I had got the problem fixed.

I bought this code reader based on prior good experiences with older Actron OBD 2 Code Readers and Scanners. Big mistake on my part for allowing that to influence my purchase decision. It will not read the codes on our 1999 VW New Beetle like the older ones did. It will just stay in the reading mode and will go no further, even after 10-15 minutes it will not get past the reading phase, even after multiple tries. We had to use the loaner Code Scanner to find out what the problem was, which just so happened to be an older model Actron, go figure.It works perfectly fine with our 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis, though. So it should not be labeled and marketed as "Works with ALL 1996 and up vehicles", it should read "MOST 96 and up vehicles". Do yourself a favor and spend the extra bucks and get the better one if you have a foreign vehicle. You will thank me later. Don't waste your time and money like I did. If I could have given it a half star or less rating, I would have.

Awesome product. Splurge an extra $20-30 for this model as it is much more compact compared to the CP9125. It also displays an additional line of information.
No batteries needed. Just plug it in and get your codes! It also erases codes and display other useful information.
Very sturdy build and brightly colored so you can grab it quick out of your messy toolbox.
Very useful product for the shadetree mechanic!

When using the part the most difficult was opening the package. I appreciate the endurance the package must have during shipping. I am glad it worked right out of the package. Saved my daughter a trip to the dealership. Read the code P0442 (if I remember correctly...bad gas cap). I purchased a Stant from Advance but did not have the tether strap and could not supply one. Went to the dealership and got the O.E.M. The dealership said some of the after market caps throw a false code...I don't know about that...I got the reader on sale and they gave me 20% off of the sale price. I am very happy.

Works as advertised. I was able to read all three of my cars. A '04 Mercury Monterey, '04 Honda Element, 'and 96 VW GTI VR6. There were other reviews stating issues reading VW. I didn't have that problem.
I used a $30 off coupon online and picked this up for under $60! I'm very happy.
