Original plug has 77K miles. Even though Ford maintenance manual recommends changing at 100K miles, it is probably best to change at 60K. Especially on the 5.4L which can collect water or moisture around the plug and rust. This Ranger has a 3.0L corn burner. Still runs and starts fine, but I want to get new plugs before winter. These plugs would probably go the 100K miles. I have read Ford engines can be tempermental about which plug they use and since the existing plug has been so good, replacing them with the OEM Motorcraft plug.

These may be Motorccraft but the quality is not all that great. Started to put these in and then decided to check the gap. The gap was way over specs. I had to pull all the plugs out and regapped them. Wasted time!!!!! I guess I should have checked the gap on the first one. Some of the electrodes were not centered over the center electrode and I had to reposition them. They will work but at five dollars a plug, they should be right on.

Comments about Motorcraft Original Equipment Finewire Single Platinum Spark Plug:

I have used these for many years since I bought my truck 10 years ago. I bought 6 new one this week and installed them.. Took about 15 min to do all 6 of them. My truck started miss firing bad. I took them all out and check the gaps (recommend by advance) and sure enough all of them were .16 off so I had to take about 30 min to re gap them. Once they were gapped correctly everything work perfect like I have always come to expect from my spark plugs. My mileage actually increased an average of 5 MPG.

Replaced old Autolight plugs and replaced with these Motorcraft plugs and used Autolight wires in my 2.5 Ford Ranger. Have noticed a lot quicker starts since. Remember to put anti-sieze on the threads and dielectric grease on the electrode to make future removal easier. Whoever installed the old Autolight plugs did not and I had to use a 3 foot breaking bar on my ratchet to break them free, thought I was going to snap the old plugs off in the block.

It provide service intervals from 60,000 to 100,000 miles. If you clean these plugs you will damage the platinum coating on the electrodes. So we do not recommend regap of platinum plugs.

It could of been the wrong temperature of a plug, torqued down to hard or to loose, or the spark plug was a bad plug.

              • A:

Plugs can get damaged by pre detonation or pinging in the engine under load. There can be a lot of reasons for pinging to happen but on my 2001 Taurus it needed a good top end engine cleaning. I used SeaFoam and it seemed to take care of the pinging under load. It could also just have been a bad plug.

              • A:

The AGSF-32FM is a single Platinum plug where only the center electrode is Platinum. The 2002 Taurus' coil is designed to where half of the plugs,(3 on the V6),fire from the ground electrode over to the center electrode, instead of the way that a plug would normally fire, from the center electrode to the ground electrode.

If you don't use a double Platinum plug, where there is more durable Platinum on both electrodes, the 3 plugs that fire in reverse are going to start failing much sooner than the 3 that fire normally, from the center electrode then over to ground.

I have tried to find the double Platinum Motorcraft plug that fits the 24 valve Duratec V6 for 2002 without any luck. If you locate a set, consider yourself lucky. I can locate another manufacturer's double Platinum, but not the Motorcraft.
