Turns out a specific tool is needed, causing another trip to borrow the right one to complete the change out.

I needed to replace my leaking, OE water pump quickly, as I had almost pure water in my system & the weather was forecast to drop into the single digits for the next few days. Advance Auto Parts had this replacement unit in stock at my local store, so I ordered it online, picked it up later that day, & installed it that night. In addition, I also "borrowed" their clutch fan removal tool which worked like a charm.

Not a bad product so far but time will be the jury on this one. I purchased a remanufactured at 50,000 miles and it lasted 120,000. I hope this one goes the rest of the life of the vehicle.

You don't have to remove the fan clutch, you need a big adjustable wrench or a 1 7/16 open end wrench to remove the big nut on the back of the clutch that holds the fan/clutch assembly on. The belt will slip, so you either need a long rod to brace one of the pulley bolts on, or a pry bar to hold the pulley while you break the big nut loose.Answered on 8/7/2010 by MachZR2 from Iowa
