After doctoring up the original part last year I now needed to replace this part this year. I know everything that I read obout installing this part said to take out the radio so you would have a nice easy straight shot to install this. personally it was more a pain to do that. All I did was take out the ashtray/cup holder, take off the wrap around shroud on the bottom and the glove box. Reached up unplugged the Actuator put my small ratchet with a 5/8" socket on the 3 bolts and took them out. Pulled the old part out, put the new part up just the opposite way and proceeded to put everything back together. Total time to do all this maybe an hour if your lucky. Good thing I didn't have to rely on the Haynes manual for this as it doesn't have anything on this to reference. Over all this is not a hard fix it and saving around 200-300 dollars is great. Now my wife has heat for the winter.

Comments about Dorman - OE Solutions HVA/C Air Door Actuator:

Symptoms of a failed actuator are a clicking sound from behind the center console and inability to get any warm air out of the heat ducts. The clicking sound changes when the heat/cold temperature adjustment is moved. The replacement actuator bolted right back in place of the failed unit. Removing dash components to get to the actuator consitutes the majority of the work to replace this part but it is more than worth it to get some heat on a cold winter day. Search the web for installation videos to help you get started. The actuator has been in use for a week with no problems so far.

The actuator in my Ford Windstar was broken so I figured I should replace it before winter since the heater wasn't working in the front (was in the back). The part was pretty simple to install compared to other car work I've done. I just replaced it and the heat started working right away. Hopefully it lasts for at least five years!

Easy to install. Just have to remove the stereo and remove 3 screws. Just make sure to line up the spindle before tightening down. Replaced this part on my 2001 ford windstar due to temperature control not working and hearing a clicking behind the dash. The plastic gears had completely broken and the spindle would not turn to open the heater door. Once replaced... Problem solved and I had temp control back. Cheap and easy DIY fix!

Personally, with the aid of my wife and her much smaller hands, it took about an hour to an hour and a half. We removed the radio, and the HVAC control unit along the with the cover for the whole radio and HVAC area. Once inside, it took some maneuvering, but we were able to fit some wrenches in the back where the part is located, get the broken one out and fit the new one in.

With enough experience in this area, you could do this job in less than an hour, maybe even 30 minutes.

Not very long and it all depends on which way you are doing it. It took me longer to do it going through the front with the radio than it did going from under and behind the radio. If your pretty proficiant at fixing things and hour or so is all it should take.

Tony, It took me about an hour. If you are familiar with location, others have said 30-45 mins. I have very little experience, but I always do online research as this usually gives detailed instructions, location of parts, how to's and hints. Some sites even show detailed pictures from others who replace the parts. I am a 52 yr old woman who will try to fix it myself before I will pay to have it done. I figure if it's already broken, I can't really do much more damage. This was replaced in my boyfriend's van, although I replaced the blower motor in my cavalier last year. Similar job. Make sure you have the radio removal tool-very easy to take out radio with this.

This would depend on your automotive experience in the A/C system. If your new to this area I would suggest that you visit your local store and purchase a Haynes Repair Manual
for your perticular vehicle. It will take you step by step through the process of installing this part.
