Comments about Valvoline DOT 3 and 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid (12 oz.):

Most brake fluid, for regular cars/trucks, is the same Dot3. This fluid from Valvoline is rated as Dot4. That means it will work in cars calling for Dot3 but can handle higher temps then the standard Dot3 fluid.

The only con is price. If you need high performance fluid then this will be worth it.
But if you have just a regular car/truck then the Dot3 store brand will be cheaper and do the same job.

          • Q:

Can I safely use this to top off my motorcycle front brake that is labeled to use DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid? I have a can of this product and wonder if it will be compatible with whatever is already in the reservior. I am not sure if it is DOT 3, DOT 4, synthetic or whatever.
            Please advise...

              A:

If you do not know if the brake fluid in your reservoir is synthetic or not, the recomendation is to bleed out the brake lines and reservoir. To make sure check with a reputable mechanic first.

          • Q:

Is this product considered DOT 5 breakfluid since it is synthetic break fluid? Does it influence the seals in any way?

            • A:

No. Synthetic brake fluids are now available in DOT 3 and 4 and are compatible with non-synthetic DOT 3 and 4 brake fluids.

            • A:

DOT 5 is a silicone fluid.

Answered on 2/4/2010 by N4Sir from MS
            • A:

No, it is Dot 4 fluid, that is backwards compatible with Dot 3.
It has no effect on the seals, and it is NOT COMPATIBLE with DOT 5.
It can be used in most automobile braking systems.
I just installed it in my 1995 Toyota Camry, and couldn't be happier.

Answered on 2/5/2010 by Justin from Salem, NH
            • A:

NO!!! This is NOT DOT5. DOT 5 is silicone based and can NOT be mixed with DOT3 or DOT4.

I know Corvettes, and some other performance cars, use to use Silicone (DOT5) but newwer ones and most cars call for DOT3/4.
So please make sure you have the right stuff and don;t mix. If you do mix you will need to drain and flush the entire system.

And no if you have a leak in your brake system the fluid will not seal it up or make the seals work better. You just need to fix the leak then bleed the system.
