I installed my new DEH-5600HD a few weeks ago, and wanted to use it for a while before writing a review here. This deck sounds great, has good tone control adjustments and the three levels of loudness and 5 levels of bass boost really do add a good low end punch to the sound quality. You can adjust the loudness and bass boost to fit different types of music, and for me that makes a huge improvement in overall sound quality because some songs/albums are recorded with more or less bass and low end. The sound retriever function does help improve the sound of compressed MP3's and is adjustable to match high or low compression. That makes a very noticeable improvement in the sound quality.
The deck will also recognize a total of 500 folders and/or 15,000 songs on a flash drive, that was important to me because my last deck only read 142 folders and I have over 340 folders and about 3,500 songs on a single 32GB flash drive. The built-in equalizer curves sound good but I use the custom curve to set the sound the way I want it. The deck is very easy to operate while driving and is laid out very well with bigger buttons than most other decks.
I really like the adjustable lighting and I dialed it in to exactly match my blue-green dash lights. The display is easily visible in sunlight, but it is a lot better if you set the display to white on bright sunny days. I like how the deck has the ability to have the buttons one color and the display a different color. I set the display to white and buttons to blue-green in the daytime, and the custom illumination function remembers my blue-green settings when I change the display color back to blue-green at night. I will say the display is a bit more dim if you wear polarized sunglasses. The display will wash out when you look at it head on with polarized sunglasses in the daytime, but that is not the deck's fault. I will order or buy some non-polarized shades as soon as I can find a store that sells them.
The radio tuner works great, just like all Pioneer radios. I don't have any HD Radio stations here so I can't comment on that. I do not use the Mix Trax feature but it seems to be a cool and neat option. Overall this is an excellent quality deck, is good and loud on its own and has a lot of good useful features. I went from a full-blown system with a (different manufacturer) head unit, separate equalizer, amp, separate mids and tweets and a subwoofer to just this Pioneer 5600 and 4 Pioneer TSG-1644 6 1/2" speakers and I am very impressed and satisfied with the quality of my system now. I did keep the tweeters from my old system mounted on my door panels, they are connected to my new Pioneer deck now and they sound fine. This 5600 has a ton of output power and I don't believe I will ever need another amplified system with subs and all that again. The MOSFET outputs have a good loud and fat sound to them. I am very happy with this Pioneer deck, and I have tried several different brands over the last couple of years.
I purchased this unit to replace another blown head unit. I would never buy a HU without HD radio because it's free digital radio and the sound quality is well worth it.
PROS: The HD on this unit works pretty well. It cuts in and out some times, but my last unit did too. I feel it's the characteristics of HD radio. The other features of this unit are all good including the 5 band equalizer, and the control of the sub woofer. It give you many adjustments over your music including high and low-pass crossovers, and enables you to fine-tune the sound quality. Being able to change the display colors to match your interior is pretty cool too.
CONS: Mixtrax, I don't know if it's supposed to do some of the things it does, but when the Mixtrax is enabled and while listening to a usb source device, it never played the entire song, and toward the end of the song it faded the song out with some weird tones. The lights flashing is distracting at night, and I'm sure this is marketed toward the younger generation. The lighting is also very bright, it does have a dimmer, but it doesn't dim very much.
Overall, I think it's a little too much money for what you get, but a solid stereo unit. I'm only giving it 3 stars (would get 4 if not for this) because It needs to be returned. When adjusting the EQ at the 80Hz and 250Mhz levels, the sound wil all of the sudden kick-in very loud as if the volume is being turned up fully all at once. The first few times I didn't know it was going to do this and it caused my brand new very expensive amp to go into protection mode. That should absolutely not happen and if a fairly cheap HU blows my very expensive amp, I will be very upset; therefore, this unit will be going back. I've already purchased the deh-x9500bhs as a replacement.
Very easy to install with the metra wire harness and metra in-dash installation kit. However, with this particular head unit, the antenna did not work. The solder conection for the antenna inside the unit appeared to have come loose. Radio only works on one station. Until I return it, I will listen to Pandora Radio on my Iphone or listen to cds. The multi color screen feature is nice because you can change the screen color and the key color to plethora of color combinations. I will be returning it for a replacement as I look forward to using the HD radio.
