The mating surfaces of the aluminum thermostat housing on my '86 S-15 truck have become pitted and otherwise distorted. The regular gasket does not provide enough seal, but so far this stuff has. I'm very pleased and would recommend it for such situations as mine.

Replacing old thermostat, bought this gasket and silicone as well as O-ring. After removing housing, found that previous (factory) installation had only used O-ring, no gasket or silicone. I decided to follow that example in installing replacement, and used O-ring only, returning gasket and silicone to store. Seems to be working fine so far, no leaks.

Comments about Permatex Water Pump And Thermostat RTV Silicone Gasket:

I no longer use paper gaskets for waterpumps, thermostat covers, or anything that comes into contact with radiator fluids. This stuff has worked 100% of the time I have used it.

For proper application you must make sure all old gasket material is removed and cleaned with a wire brush or other abrasive scrubber. Make sure all oil/coolant is free from the gasket surface too. I use rubbing alcohol and clean paper towels for the final surface clean. Apply a thin 1/16'' on both mating surfaces and allow to dry for at least a few hours or overnight if you can. Wear disposible gloves for application for easy cleanup.

This is a good quality product but the tube isn't your standard "toothpaste" size tube... It's more like a small tube of superglue. Would be great if it came with an applicator nozzle.

I purchased this to use when installing a new water pump in my vehicle, but was told by a car buff that "Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket® Hi-Temp Adhesive Sealant" was better. So I returned this RTV and used the spray-a-gasket instead. It's a few dollars more but well worth it!!!!!

probably shouldn't. If a water pump starts to leak, there's likely something internal that's breaking down - bushing/bearing/seal of some kind. Usually, you'll notice a leak out of the bottom drain hole - don't plug that hole, it's supposed to be open.
