It's late saturday in my beat around 81 toyota when the spark plug decides to eject itself from its aluminum threaded head. At first I panicked, I didn't have time or the money to fool with such a problem. However, I was right across from Advance auto, so I thought I might as well pull in and see what they could do for me. To my surprise there was this product for [$] that fit perfectly to my exact problem. I went online to Alcoa's website to ensure proper use of the tapping tool and counter sink, and then went to work. Within a half hour I had rethreaded, cleaned, and reseated my spark plug! My weekend and my wallet were saved! Thanks Advance!

Comments about Fix-A-Thred M14-1.25 Plug-Saver Kit - 1 each insert S, N, L:
After reading several reviews I decided to give this a shot on my 1988 Mazda 626. I figured I had nothing to loose since I wasn't going to pay for a head job. I inserted the tool into the spark plug hole and it looked like I had enough clearance around the hole for it to work. As I worked the tool in and out of the plug hole, I realized that the 19mm socket wasn't going to be able to drive the tool all the way through the 3/4" deep plug hole.
So, I took a belt sander to the head of the tool and spent an hour shaving down the head of the tool to 16mm. After that i was able to complete the tap. I installed the thread insert with a gasket sealer and let it set for 24 hours. I have since put serveral thousand miles on with no problems.

Excellent for the Ford 4.6 and 5.4 spark plug problems.
Comments about Fix-A-Thred M14-1.25 Plug-Saver Kit - 1 each insert S, N, L:
product is an inexpensive fix for what could be a major problem, first the hex head was to large to fit in my ford 4.6 spark plug tube. I had to modify the hex top by grinding down to fit a 5/8 socket which fit nicley. applied heavy grease and it appears that all shavings came out. installation was easy enough although it states that for easy insertion use the spark plug to install this was virtually impossible. every time I would install the coil and tried to back out the plug to finish install the coil would come out also. I used the tap and installed and it came out ok. i used permatex hi temp ultra black to seal the coil. will be 94% cured in 24 hours 100% in seven days. I will try vehicle in 24 hours to see if repair holds. holding my breath that this works.

Go slow, helps if you have work with inserts or heli-coils before, made sure piston was just on it's way up,greased the tool to catch shavings, used compressor to blow shavings out of cylinder(blew out 6 times),clean threads, I used red permatex thread locker(300+ degrees)for insert let it cure 24hrs., torque to specs. Did this Sat., tested Sun.,drove to work Mon., Tues. was off to S.C.,no problems,12oo+ miles, 89 toyota pickup

I ejected a plug on my Chevy 2.2L OHV engine and couldn't afford a new head at the time. Bought one of these kits and followed the instructions. Word to the wise, on these engines there is not much room to work with the kit and you will have to pull a head bolt if it is in the far left cylinder. The kit worked well until it came time to set the coil in the hole. They give you a punch specifically for the application. You set the punch in straight and hit it a few times. The only problem with this is the punch gets stuck in the coil and warps the threads, plus it is EASY to mess the threads up getting it back out. when pulling the coil back out to try again it brought my nice fresh new threads back out with it leaving me with an oversized hole, no threads, and a geeked up spark plug. Overall I would say the kit is a great idea and works well for many small applications but overall is bad execution. I ended up using the medium coil and putting a washer between the coil and plug head where it sinks into the head, using JB weld to fill the threads and sinking the unit into the head. Something you should also be aware of as an afterthought is that the hole for the coil is the same size as the head your socket fits on so it is entirely possible to sink the head of the sparkplug into the head effectively junking your head. GOOD LUCK!

The shaft was too short to extend the bolt head out of the plug shaft. Unable to put socket to turn; unable to remove without using a magnet. Great idea, poor execution.

I attempted to use this on my Plymouth Acclaim. Car has aluminum heads. The spark plug hole already had been tapped for a helicoil. I had the entire old helicoil out of the head and was just using this to clean up the threads to insert a new coil. I started to thread it in by hand, then gently applied a ratchet and socket, turned it in about 2 turns and the tap broke off in the spark plug hole!!! Now I have a tap broken off in my cylinder head and the head needs to be removed and taken to a machine shop to get this trash out. Estimate from repair shop = 600.00! Contacted Advance and got a complete run around, they state that they cannot be sure I was using it correctly.
You should be able to run a tap over with a bus without damaging it.
Moral of the story, don't ever use made in India, China, Tiawan etc.. tools for critical uses.

Fixed a stripped spark plug hole in an 8 hp Tecumseh engine, worked great. But---here you can easily remove the head and do it right. On a car, you run the danger of getting chips in the cylnder if you don't grease the tap enough to catch them. Clever design, indexes on the old thread and then reams and threads for the insert. Wish they had replacement inserts and an 18mm version....
Comments about Fix-A-Thred M14-1.25 Plug-Saver Kit - 1 each insert S, N, L:
The Plug saver Kit Is a good idea but it needs improvement.
The tap tool should have a smaller head for the socket wrench or it should have a square hole in the middle for a 3/8 in. drive.
I had to weld a bolt on top of the tap in order to cut the thread for the steel insert sleeve all the way through. All this welding because of the deep and narrow configuration of the spark plug well in the cylinder head.
