This is the tool I've been looking for. The old diagnostic reader that was in my tool box was unable to read the newer Control Area Network bus (CANBUS) systems that are in today's modern automobiles. Being out in the country, there are not any diagnostic shops close by. My mother and father in-law are older and when they have a problem with their vehicles, they had no local shop to take the vehicle. I can now perform diagnostics for them and give them a reason and a solution for the problem.

This is a great OBD II and CAN reader, but it does NOT read abs as advertised. If you need or want ABS you should look at another unit. If all you need is OBD II or CAN, this unit is great. It has plug and play on-line support and updating - so buy it once, and have it forever, even if you buy a new car next year. It also has plug and play access to code explanations, and recommended step by step fixes. The only problem with this unit is that it was misrepresented as reading ABS, when the unit they ship clearly does not. This is more of an issue with the product description by the retailer, than an issue with the product itself. (See service and delivery comments) I have marked that I would not recommend, and that is based solely on the need for an ABS code reader. If you don't need the ABS, this is actually a fine unit.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The Controller Area Network (CAN) electrical systems began to appear in new vehicles in 2003. Since then, more and more vehicles have been equipped with CAN systems, until 2008 when virtually all passenger cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. were CAN-equipped.
OBD stands for "on-board diagnostics," a computer-based system built into all model year (MY) 1996 and newer light-duty cars and trucks.
The ABS is a four-wheel system that prevents wheel lock-up by automatically modulating the brake pressure during an emergency stop.
