I had a Solar (brand) for many years, until it finally burned out. I knew I needed a replacement that was lightweight, and easier to read and understand battery and system status. The old Solar unit was also an engine starter.
I looked at the features, price and brand reviews as well as the reviews for this unit. I decided to forego the engine starter feature. I have a problem with my '99 Durango SLT. If I do not activate the security system manually by the lock switch (I bought it used, so there is no remote), it "worries" all night. Why do I say this? Because when I come out the next day, the battery is drained. Now I can periodically connect the charger, and let it charge overnight to make sure I come to a fresh battery in the morning.
The no-spark feature is another plus. There is always that thought in the back of my mind of "what if gases...." The plastic housing and slim shape makes it both safe and easy to leave it under the hood while it trickle-charges the battery overnight.
It has only been two days, but if there are any changes I will be sure to post again.

Light weight
after picking it up at the local store, I found that this item was just too light weight. I traded it in for the next higher price one that does more.

Comments about Schumacher SSC-1000A - 10/6/2 Amp Ship 'N Shore:
This one don't use a big transformer as it's
a switching type dc converter.
Transformer-types is helpful to filter out
large spikes on the power line.
But as charging a battery is not sensitive to noise on the ac line, switching type is OK.
It have a small fan, so you could put it in crampt location as long you don't block the side vents.
The clips are pretty heavyduty and can probably handle 50amp,
but the charger can not output more than 10Amps anyway.
It's automatic and will not overcharge your 12v battery.

Comments about Schumacher SSC-1000A - 10/6/2 Amp Ship 'N Shore:
Picked this up because my generator battery was out of juice (left it on by mistake.) This was the best price/feature product available, and it worked like advertised to charge the battery within a couple hours. I can't speak for its longevity (yet) as I've only used it once, hence 4 out of 5 stars. The instructions could be written better, but you'll figure it out. Overall, so far so good.

Comments about Schumacher SSC-1000A - 10/6/2 Amp Ship 'N Shore:
This is a nice quality charger and came at a very good price. The only thing that I did not realize at the time I bought it was that is has a built in fan that constantly runs which makes it a bit noisy. Also I use it on my boat for charging the trolling motor, the bright lights in the display cannot be turned down. This combined with the noise I fear may tempt someone to come by and make off with both the charger and battery.
Other than that I think the charger is nicely layed out, the controls are easy to understand, and my first charge of my optima bluetop battery was a great success, so i would recommend it for garage/boat use. I've only owned it for a short time so cannot speak about reliability as yet.
