I Purchased this dual purpose battery and a 1000 amp starting battery for my 19' center console. The first day, the starting battery worked fine and this dual purpose battery worked the accessories just fine. However, the second day, the starting battery failed to start the 150 Merc but the Dual Purpose did. The rest of the week, we relied on the Dual Purpose to perform both duties of starting and accessories. Although not the same amp rating as the starting battery, it didn't hesitate to start the outboard.

Comments about Autocraft Marine 12-Volt Marine/RV Dual-Purpose Service Battery:

I use this deep cycle battery as a portable power supply for my boat trailer winch when towed by a vehicle other than my truck which is hard wired with a 60amp receptacle.
I have also used it in conjunction with a 400 watt power inverter to power my CPAP when camping where there is no electric service. A CPAP is a medical device used by persons suffering from sleep apnea.

For under $100 it had the highest reserve cap. Fits in place of a group 27 if you can live with the extra half inch in the middle height clamped from above or over the top (post height the same as 27). I had to bend my rv's top clamp but for the extra capacity it was perfect. Only time will tell its longevity. Have not utilised it yet for 12VDC supply. My Interstate and Deka both lasted 5 and 6 years but I have my doubts as to this one. We shall see.

                            • Q:

I use a battery strictly for a trolling motor on a one man boat, running it constantly in fast water for 5 hours at a time, so the ability to recharge many times is a must. What is the best battery for this application? It must hold a charge for this length of time. I am running a 54 lb thrust motor(digital). Your standard marine batteries last about 3 years and have done a good job.

A Reserve Capacity of 210 min and an 205Ah rating seems unrealistic. The RC generally double the Amp hour rating so it should be closer to 105 Ah. Do you think there could have been a mistake on your end, perhaps even a simple typo? Is there proven data to back up this claim? Where can I view this data? I am looking to purchas 2, 12v batteries for a 5th wheel trailer and I'm trying to find one that will last a good amount of time, while powering my trailer and appliances, before needing to be recharged.

                                A:

With reference to this Autocraft Marine / RV 12-Volt Deep Cycle Service Battery, 675 CCA - part# 31DP-6, the term “maintenance-free” is only partially true. Lead-acid batteries normally consume some of the water in their dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte during a normal charge-discharge cycle. It actually electrolyzes into hydrogen and oxygen and escapes as gas. So adding water periodically is necessary to keep the plates flooded. Maintenance-free batteries use a calcium alloy of lead instead of an antimony alloy, which reduces the amount of electrolysis. In addition, the amount of free-standing electrolyte above the plates is designed to be much higher in a new maintenance-free battery. This means that there’s enough electrolyte to keep the plates covered even after a few seasons of normal use. So, during the battery’s normal service life there should be no need to add water. Any abnormal electrical system condition or high ambient temperatures may boil off more than the normal amount of water. However, adding water may extend the service life of these supposedly maintenance-free batteries. • Q:

If this battery is "maintenance free" does that mean that the cells cannot be accessed to add distilled water should it be needed? Typically wet cell deep cycle batteries need an equilization charge for proper maintenance. Can this battery take an equilization charge?
