Dead and locked up after 15 months.

About Me Mechanic

Comments about ToughOne AC Compressor with Clutch:

I had some points to use so I got this unit for my personal pickup truck. I am a professional tech, so I followed the golden rules - new accumulator, orifice tube, inspect and clean the lines, 2 hour vacuum pull down (I live in humid Florida), correct oil charge/refrigerant charge, pressure readings normal, etc. (Note; I did not replace the condenser as the old compressor was still functioning but had a slow leak in the main shaft o-rings).

The AC worked flawlessly for 15 months. Then one morning I got in the truck to leave and when I hit the AC switch the engine died. At first I thought the ECU on the truck blew it was so sudden, but soon realized the AC compressor had suddenly and completely locked up.

Needless to say I'm not happy about this. Now I have to replace the condenser in addition to everything else. So even though this is under warranty, I am going to get an AC Delco which I should have done in the first place.

Comments about ToughOne AC Compressor with Clutch:

Bought this compressor with the accumulator, condensor, and orifice tube 18 months ago and it was professionally installed by a shop. While it working, my A/C was ice cold. Despite the reviews I had seen and read, I thought that if the manufacturer was willing to offer a lifetime warranty, perhaps they had made improvements. Not so. The compressor and clutch seized up on me while I was on a road trip out of state.

The shop that installed it had since gone out of business. I was trying to get the parts swapped out under warranty through Advance Auto because luckily I had the receipt. I had expected to pay for the labor to have the other shop install it. Unfortunately, the nearest Advance Auto didn't want to exchange it for me and said it was the original shops job to perform the part swap. The part was defective, I had the receipt. What's the problem. Contacted the original store the parts were purchased from and they said they didn't see the problem and then they contacted the store nearest me. The nearby store still didn't want to help me. So, we contacted the district manager. He confirmed that there shouldn't be a problem and then contacted the local store. Problem solved. I have NEVER had any problem like this before with Advance Auto's service. While it was rectified, the problem could've been avoided by following my instinct and purchasing a better compressor. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with another ToughOne compressor that will likely die on me.

      Avoid this compressor. Period.

It takes at least 20 minutes to begin cooling, but it NEVER gets cold! I am taking it back to the mechanic today to have it replaced with a re-build. I wish he had read up on this before he put it on my truck because I would not have allowed it PERIOD. Don't waste your money on this one...it will only frustrate you (especially when you want cold air on a hot day).
