Stat did not open until 200 degrees. It is designed to open slowly so my temp went up to 230 degrees before dropping back to 190 and then the cycle started all over again and back up to 230. Two different stats did the same thing. 160 degree stat opens at 180. I am tired of wasting gaskets and draining my system so I am keeping the 160 stat out of frustration.

Comments about Stant Superstat™ Super Premium Thermostat, 180 Degrees Fahrenheit:

2001 Dodge Dakota. Don't forget to order a gasket while your at it. I was able to get to mine with a 6" extension on my ratchet, a little bit of finess, and some patience. This saved me the trouble of removing my alternator. Once removed, you will have to clean up the area and put in your new gasket. This thermostat is cooler running than my old one. It allows my truck to run inside the normal range, but on the lower end of normal. This was an exact fit, and looks like a higher quality part than the old one that had defected. It's been about 2 months now, and it's still working strong.

Part of engine rebuild. Replacing a fail-safe thermostat that was defective. Stant is a great name un thermostats and should give years of dependable service.

Best money I've spent on my truck. 98 Dodge Durango 318 w/250k miles. It was easy to do. I did it at the same time as my waterpump. If you are going to do the thermostat I'd say you should also do the water outlet deal, and what ever rotten hose is attached to it.

To figure out what temp. your Thermostat is you would have to look in your factory service manual or a haynes repair manual. I also can suggest that you call your local dealership.

The best temperature rating thermostat is the one that originally came in your vehicle. Unless you are doing extreme racing, there really is not a need to change the temperature rating on the thermostat.
