  • Q:

2000-2001 0331 heads are known for cracking between the 3rd and 4th cyl.
How do I know this isn't one of those?
and that I won't run into this problem down the road?
That is why I am looking a new one now.

Though there is a cracking problem with 0331 heads it can easily be avoided. The main symptom of a cracked 0331 head is coolant loss. If you check/maintain the coolant level in the coolant reservoir regularly, the 0331 head will have an extended life.

A garage just put one of these in my jeep last week. It's cracked already. No overheat. I've been driving very carefully. Insist on one with "TUPY" stamped inside. Those are later, reinforced castings.

customer care is incorrect on this matter.
The 0331 heads are prone and known for cracking in as little as 1200 miles. Currently have a 2000 xj cherokee with this problem and looking for a replacement now. A "Tuppy" head is a good start. It has the word "Tuppy" stamped on it,also any reinforced cylinder head for the 4.0 is good. Do your self a favor and do not buy a 0331 head from any reman shop, they will only fail.
