This one don't use a big transformer as it's
a switching type dc converter.

Transformer-types is helpful to filter out
large spikes on the power line.
But as charging a battery is not sensitive to noise on the ac line, switching type is OK.

It have a small fan, so you could put it in crampt location as long you don't block the side vents.

The clips are pretty heavyduty and can probably handle 50amp,
but the charger can not output more than 10Amps anyway.

It's automatic and will not overcharge your 12v battery.

Left on a reading light in the car, it drained the one year old battery all the way down. This charger wouldn't charge it. Manual's fine print says red light not on, possible cause "The battery is less than one volt." Solution "Replace the battery or try using a manual charger to bring above one volt". So my "smart" charger told me to go out and buy a manual charger.

I got this for charging an Advance Automotive AutoCraft Marine / RV 12-Volt Deep Cycle Battery, Group Size 29HM. It's for a Minn Kota 55 trolling motor. This charges fast on 10a. The constant on fan in it is a bit loud. I love the way all the cords store inside of it under the handle. The % percent charged display and the ability to charge any battery type is very nice. It's way ahead of the Old School charger I had. I love it.

Comments about Schumacher 2/6/10 Amp 12-Volt Ship 'N Shore Automatic Battery Charger:

I use the charger for keeping my boat and trailer batteries charged up. It is very light and easy to transport to and from the boat dock. I like how the indicator lights help to give me an idea of the state of charge in each battery. It also charges each of my batteries quickly so I don't waste time checking each battery with a test light. The small size makes it easy to store, this is very important since I have such limited space in my storage shed. So far I have not discovered anything about the charger that I don't like. I only bought it several weeks ago, so for the long term I am not sure how it will hold up, but from what I can see there should be no problems.

What is the 120 volt amp draw at its peak load ( 10 amps)? I can't seem to see this in the specs. For example other 6volt chargers are drawing 1.3 amps. At 120 volts ?

                          A:

Hi Bob, glad to help you! If the battery is left discharged for an extended period of time, it may become sulfated and not accept a normal charge. If the charger detects a sulfated battery, the charger will switch to a special mode of operation designed for such batteries. If successful, normal charging will resume after the battery is desulfated. Desulfation could take up to 8 hours. If desulfation fails or if charging can not be completed normally, charging will abort. When charging aborts, the charger's output is shut off, all of the LEDs are turned off and the digital display will show bad bat. In that state, the charger ignores all buttons. To reset after an aborted charge, unplug the charger from the AC outlet, wait a few moments and plug it back in. For more information, please visit this owner's manual link. Is this considered a "portable starter", meaning does it have to be plugged into a socket in order to work?

I'm happy to help, Shelli! This Schumacher 10/6/2 Amp Ship 'N Shore Automatic Battery Charger is considered "portable" in that it has a handle and is lightweight. This charger does require that it be plugged into an outlet to provide power, it does not include its own battery to jump start the vehicle. The product type you might be looking for would be a jump starter or jumper.

It is not a portable starter. Those are called a portable jump pack. This is a battery charger only in either 2, 6, or 10 amp output and depending on the battery size and discharge amount, it could take an average of 10-12 hours to recharge a battery. For it to recharge a battery it needs plugged in to a 120 volt AC current outlet.
