      A:

Yes, the bendix gear is placed outwards in order to engage the flywheel. The starter would spin the flywheel if the bendix gear had engaged to the flywheel. A:

It seems you have a condition called heatsoak. If you are running the headers that mount very close to a starter body you will run into this heatsoak condition. Also 60's Chevrolet had a sheet metal shield mounted near the starter to deflect heat. If you do not see this in your vehicle you can find them in junk yards at a good price. The extra clearance between it and the exhaust manifold helps with heat too. I would recommend that you install any heat shield or heat blanket (looks just like a metallic coated blanket that wraps around the starter) before installing a good starter like this ProForm High Torque Starter Chevy V6, S/B & B/B V8 Heavy Duty 12V 20 Motor, 11:1 Comp (Part No. 66258). For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto store and one of our representatives will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
