Q:Will this work on my 1970 Firebird with a 400 engine?
A:Hi Bob, I'm glad to assist you. This ProForm High Torque Starter Chevy V6, S/B & B/B V8 Heavy Duty 12V 20 Motor, 11:1 Comp (Part No. 66258) does not fit your 1970 Pontiac Firebird. We do offer the CARQUEST or ToughOne Starter - Remanufactured (Part No. 3696S) for your vehicle.
Q:DOES THE BENDIX GEAR KICK OUT TO ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL?
A:Yes, the bendix gear is placed outwards in order to engage the flywheel. The starter would spin the flywheel if the bendix gear had engaged to the flywheel. Q:Hi I have a street rod with a small block 350 in it 1969 year of engine and i have replaced the starter 3 time seem to work fine for a while but when it get hot it dose nothing i wait for a while and the starter works i have the starter wraped with a heat shield as well but it's still a problem is there a starter that i can use that will fix this problem ? i'm using a high torque starter now thanks for your help anthony
A:It seems you have a condition called heatsoak. If you are running the headers that mount very close to a starter body you will run into this heatsoak condition. Also 60's Chevrolet had a sheet metal shield mounted near the starter to deflect heat. If you do not see this in your vehicle you can find them in junk yards at a good price. The extra clearance between it and the exhaust manifold helps with heat too. I would recommend that you install any heat shield or heat blanket (looks just like a metallic coated blanket that wraps around the starter) before installing a good starter like this ProForm High Torque Starter Chevy V6, S/B & B/B V8 Heavy Duty 12V 20 Motor, 11:1 Comp (Part No. 66258).
