I have used Pertronix ignitors in the past, and love them, however I had problems with this one. After installing it the car wouldn't run. I exchanged it for another new unit, and it still wouldn't run so I put the points back in.
Three days later the coil on the car failed, so there may not have been a problem with the ignitors.

Comments about PerTronix 1281 Ignitor Ford 8 cyl:

Great product that fixed my timing and ignition issues in my 1967 Mustang with a 302. I'd heard all about the PerTronix ignitor through various restoration channels, but I was a still little hesitant about getting it and making my car too "electronic." That is, until my old points system made getting my motor perfectly timed a real hassle. I bought this, installed it in under an hour, and now my car idles smoother, starts easier, and overall runs better than it ever has. Haven't been using it long enough to attest to its longetivity, but the 30-month guarantee seems to indicate that PerTronix stands by its products. Very pleased with my purchase.

Don't forget to open the spark plug gap after installing. Spark plug gaps were tight when using points ignition due to the low power they provided and can be typically gapped .010-.015 over what was orignally specified with the increase of power going to the plugs

I installed this product on a 1973 Ford F100 with a 302. I would go through condensers every 3 to 5 days. It took just 15 minutes really taking my time! The truck fired up on the first try. I used the original ignition coil.

I bought this for my personal car and after three months of occational driving the engine began to backfire. It would run great for a few miles and then as the temp went up it would barely run. I threw it in the trash and put points back in. No more problems.

Comments about PerTronix 1281 Ignitor Ford 8 cyl:

I bought a Classic Car and wanted to put in a more reliable ignition system than the old points and condenser. It works great and was very easy to install. I also replaced the Coil with a Pertronix 'Flamer Thrower" Coil, as recommended. You will need a timing light to make sure that the ignition timing is correct after the installation. I had not checked the ignition timing prior to installing the Ignitor and Coil, but there is a big improvement in performance after they both were installed.
One lesson learned, make sure that when you install the magnet sleeve over the distributor shaft and onto the point cam that it is fully and equally down around the distributor shaft. When I first put the magnet sleeve on, I was afraid to apply too much pressure for fear of breaking something. Without it being equally down, some (4 out of 8) cylinders experienced a weaker spark and the inductive timing light would not sense and "flash" for those 4 cylinders. On of the cylinders having a weak spark for me was cylinder #1 that is required to time the engine. Although the engine ran, I could not time the engine until I corrected the magnet sleeve. I spent a lot of time checking for bad spark plugs and wires before thinking that an uneven magnet sleeve would cause the symptom that I was experiencing. So I'm letting others know to check that it's is all the way down so it does not happen to you.
I do highly recommend the product and it is well worth the money to not have to mess with the issues of breaker points.

Nowhere does it state that you'll need either a resistor or one of their "Flamethrower" coils to make this work...If You don't have the correct coil it will ruin your ignition system
