The mating surfaces of the aluminum thermostat housing on my '86 S-15 truck have become pitted and otherwise distorted. The regular gasket does not provide enough seal, but so far this stuff has. I'm very pleased and would recommend it for such situations as mine.

Replacing old thermostat, bought this gasket and silicone as well as O-ring. After removing housing, found that previous (factory) installation had only used O-ring, no gasket or silicone. I decided to follow that example in installing replacement, and used O-ring only, returning gasket and silicone to store. Seems to be working fine so far, no leaks.

Comments about Permatex Water Pump And Thermostat RTV Silicone Gasket (.5 oz):

You will have trouble using this stuff on anything with a sideways thermostat- the thermostat is likely to fall into the wrong position while the product is curing. Also the pack has different directions than this site, and different from one reviewer too. Its not clear how slack to leave the thermostat bolts while the product cures. Since I have had extra trouble with mine, I am waiting about 12 hours before adding a bit more force than hand tight. I hope this works.

I no longer use paper gaskets for waterpumps, thermostat covers, or anything that comes into contact with radiator fluids. This stuff has worked 100% of the time I have used it.

For proper application you must make sure all old gasket material is removed and cleaned with a wire brush or other abrasive scrubber. Make sure all oil/coolant is free from the gasket surface too. I use rubbing alcohol and clean paper towels for the final surface clean. Apply a thin 1/16'' on both mating surfaces and allow to dry for at least a few hours or overnight if you can. Wear disposible gloves for application for easy cleanup.

This is a good quality product but the tube isn't your standard "toothpaste" size tube... It's more like a small tube of superglue. Would be great if it came with an applicator nozzle.

I did not wait at all and filled my radiator up immediately after using this, saw that it was leaking and emptied the whole thing again. Is it worth it to let it cure overnight now? Or should I just scrape it off and start over?

probably shouldn't. If a water pump starts to leak, there's likely something internal that's breaking down - bushing/bearing/seal of some kind. Usually, you'll notice a leak out of the bottom drain hole - don't plug that hole, it's supposed to be open.
