I was told by the manager at my local advance auto parts store not to use too much glue and that 'less' is more. I think others had problems because they squirted too much glue onto the button. I do admit that there is no way to gauge how much of a drop to apply. The written instructions are unclear on this.

After following the directions I found I had a patch of runny glue on the windshield that didn't fully harden/set after a full day and certainly wouldn't hold a mirror. It might work IF you removed the windshield, turned it upside down, and attatched it that way so that gravity pulled it into the windshield. Give it a week to set and reinstall the windshield and you'll be ready to go. I strongly recommend this product to anyone wanting to spend hours of quality time with their family working on a impossible mirror repair project. The product has unlimited sales potential for that demographic.

Please pull this product from the shelves ASAP.

Works great, if your pak isn't old!

Comments about Permatex Extreme Rearview Mirror Professional-Strength Adhesive:

I bought one off the shelf, cleaned perfectly, used as per directions. Waited overnight to mount the mirror. As soon as I adjusted the mirror, tab pulled right off the glass. I noticed, the glue, was still wet, slimy. as if it wasn't activated. I did my research and found if you buy from GM, or Ford, the official P/N to put your mirror back on, this is the kit you get, you can tell, it's just in a different color cardboard card. But same glue vile, same blue activator pak. I figured, I must be doing something wrong. I called Permatex. The first question the tech asked me was, what's the 1st 2 digits from the printed number on the activator pak. I said 3H. 3=2013. H=August (A would Jan...etc). These adhesives have a shelf life, that permatex is not making public. The date code, is on the activator pak's face that is not visible through the window of the packaging. The instructions make 0 mention of any expiration date. It makes sense, most high quality glues do expire after 1 or two years. In this case, 2 years max, less than 1 is ideal. I took mine back and the guy pulled 3 or 4 and broke them open and found a 6A one, meaning Jan of 2016, or about 8 months old. I followed the same procedure I did the night before, and it works fine, I can't pry the tab off the glass if I wanted to. Believe me, I tried. But, you as the consumer can't walk into the store and start busting up packages to get the date code off the activator pak inside. So, it IS a permatex problem. Without knowing when your package was made, you've no idea if it's going to work or not. As such, I cannot recommend this product, I can only say, AdvanceAuto in my town was kind enough to bust open enough to find one that was recent. As a footnote, the same issue is presnet in consumer loctite and 3M versions of this. They'll expire, and are the source of the majority of the negative reviews. The glues do work, if they're not expired. I can only say, if you bought this, and it didn't work, look at your date code on the activator pak. If it's old, call permatex, thre more people they have calling, the more chance the practice will get changed.

Garbage. I cleaned the glass and mount thoroughly, including sanding of the button and using acetone to remove any traces of adhesive or residue prior to following the instructions exactly. I let the button set for 24 hours taped to the glass prior to applying the mirror. Fell off first time the mirror was touched. Do not buy unless you want to waste time and money. Certainly the other bad reviews were because the others who tried did not follow instructions! Wrong.

Comments about Permatex Extreme Rearview Mirror Professional-Strength Adhesive:

This product works within a minute, however I waited a few hours, after string it on the windshield. The instructions say apply one drop, but for five plus bucks, I'm not taking any chances on having to buy an additional pack, so I coated the entire side I was mounting in place, and held it in place for 2-3 min (applying pressure). So far so good! Do yourself a favor and don't do the application until sunset.

I'm an engineer and I know how important prep work can be so like many others, I followed the directions exactly as described, but waited 90 minutes instead of 30 to attach the mirror only because I got distracted. It fell off as soon as I tried to make an adjustment. Didn't bother trying a second time because I already lost confidence in this product. Statistically this one incident already tells me the probability of failure again is high. Why did I bother reading the reviews if I was just going to go buy this product anyway? Dummy me!!!

I completely followed the instructions, except I mounted the mirror the day after I glued the button to the glass. The first time I drove the car, the mirror fell off within thirty minutes on the road. This car is over forty years old, so I've done this job before. Never had one fail this soon. They always seem to stick for a couple of years.

As with most anything, results vary based upon the amount of prep taken. I feel if you follow the directions for this product, it will work as advertised. I took care to sand the metal button and to carefully scuff the windshield where the button was to be affixed. Prep wipe is for windshield only and doubles as the activator for the adhesive, which goes on the button only. So far, so good!

I am a professional materials engineer and yet it took me 3 tries to get this to stick. First try, adhesive was not cured in 30 minutes. Second try, let it cure overnight but it only stuck modestly to the windshield not the button. Third try, sanded button, sanded windshield, wiped the activator cloth around the edge of the button to be sure that gets kicked over. One more thing, I only just barely tightened the screw. I hate to change so many things at once, but I was out of activator and adhesive so it ws last chance. Given so many failures by others, I can't help but wonder if the button is flexed off the windshield if snugged up too much....but I'm not going to try to find out!

I have tried to find a good product to hold the mirror on my Jeep but have not found ANYTHING worthwhile, this one included.

I have used it twice. The first time, it fell off about a week when I was adjusting the mirror. So the next time, I learned to hold the base against the windshield when I make adjustments. Well, that worked good for about 6 months but one morning on the way to work I get into the Jeep and the mirror is laying on the floor.

I really don't know what to try next. It is very frustrating not to be able to buy a product to stick a mirror to the windshield.

                        A:

Hi Johns. No, with reference to your inquiry on the Permatex Extreme Rearview Mirror Professional-Strength Adhesive - Part No. 81840, the glass panes of fish tank are never allowed to touch each other, as the movement of the water (vibrations from filter pump, fish movements, transfer of vibrations from persons passing by etc.) would lead to the self-destruction of the glass. The (thin) adhesive layer would not be sufficient to prevent the glass panes from direct contact and is not elastic enough to absorb the forces, which may occur. For any further assistance please feel free to call us at: 1-877-238-2623 or visit the nearest Advance Auto Parts store and one of our Parts Pros will gladly assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.
