Hi John w! The 1998 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L V-8 uses the front mounted sensor which reads off of the cassettes and timing is to be locked in place with a special Rotunda Tool before removing the chain, that way when the components are replaced the engine will know when to fire and not damage any new components or risk timing being out. Also, sometimes a mechanic shop or Ford dealership will only fix one side at a time, but the other side must be locked in place with the correct holding tools.

      A:

Once you remove the camshaft synchronizer from your 4.6 Romeo Cylinder block, attach the OTC Ford Camshaft Positioning Tool - Part No. OTC6009, align the synchronizer vane with the radial slot of the positioning tool, and rotate the tool on the synchronizer base until the tool's boss engages the base notch. Dip gear end into ESE-M2C123-A oil or equivalent to coat gear, thrust washer and lower bearing. Finally install camshaft synchronizer into cylinder block.
