  • Q:

I currently have the BR6HS spark plug in a Go Kart with a 6 HP Subaru engine model EX17. I know this is the direct replacement for the factory installed but I would like to upgrade and install a spark plug that would maximize performance.

Whether it has a higher heat rating or made of more superior material. I can't find where I can cross reference this part number to see what options are available to upgrade to.

      A:

I'm happy to help, Kerri! This NGK Nickel Spark Plug (BR6HS) (Part No. 3922) interchanges with an Autolite Industrial Engine, Lawn/Garden, Outdoor Power Equipment, Small Engine Non-Resistor Copper Core Spark Plug (Part No. 414). Autolite says that this spark plug is designed to last longer and hold up to the extremely high pressures and thermal shocks in racing engines.

Use caution when switching to a non-resistor spark plug. If your engine has an electronic ignition, this may cause a loss of engine performance, misfires or a rough idle. This type of spark plug may interfere with radios, cellphones, televisions and two-way communications devices.

Other spark plugs that this NGK spark plug interchange with are: Autolite 4093, MP4093 and MP4093DP2 and ACDelco R43FS. Not all of these spark plugs are available through AdvanceAutoParts.com, please contact your local Advance Auto Parts or CARQUEST store for availability.

      A:

I'm happy to help, Budda! This sounds like an interesting project! Based on my research, it looks as though you should be able to continue to use the original equipment type spark plugs, such as these NGK Nickel Spark Plugs (BR6HS, Part No. 3922) in your 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle 1.6L H4. The heat range of the spark plug should not need to change.

You may be able to open up the gap on the spark plugs to take better advantage of the high energy spark. You will want to make sure that you have upgraded your spark plug wires too. The information I gathered is from other vehicle owners as well as personal knowledge of vehicle ignition systems. I suggest that before you make these changes, check with the manufacturers of the aftermarket parts you have purchased for the vehicle and see they have any specific recommendations. They will know their products and how to best implement them for your build.

You may also find that owner enthusiast forums have a vast wealth of information from others that may have had similar projects that may help point you in the right direction.
