Hi K-Town Daddy, I'm glad to assist you. This National Axle Repair Bearing (Part No. RP-1561-FO) should work fine on your 2000 Ford Expedition 4.6L and it fits either rear right or left side.

      • Q:

Is this part (Part No. RP-1561-FO) the inner bearing? According to one of the customer service answers, "the seal on the right side goes up against the speedometer gear". If so, is Part No. RP-6408 the outer bearing? This would be for a 98 f150 super cab 5.4.

          A:

I'm happy to help, Dude! These National Axle Repair Bearings (Part No. RP-1561-FO and Part No. RP-6408) for the 1998 Ford F-150 Super Cab 5.4L V8 do the same job. They are both for replacing the rear axle bearing. Part No. RP-1561-FO is for the 9.75" rear axle and RP-6408 is for the 8.8" rear axle.

An axle repair bearing is engineered to replace both the bearing and conventional seal and moves the position of the bearing and seal so that they ride on an unworn section of the axle shaft. The previous answer is inaccurate in the description of the part. The team member may have been confused and was thinking of a bearing found in the differential. This bearing is found on the outer parts of the axle where the axle shaft rides.

Why is there a seal on the differential side of this bearing? How does the oil get to the bearing? Should the seal be removed prior to installation.

Hi Bruce, with reference to your inquiry on the National Axle Repair Bearing -part# RP-1561-FO, the seal on the right side goes up against the speedometer gear. The other side of the bearing is open and gets its lubrication from the splashing of the gear oil as does most of the transmission. Wheel bearings perform two very important jobs in a vehicle’s suspension. The wheel bearing allows the wheels to rotate with minimal function, and they also support the vehicle’s weight.
