Q:are gaps preset or can you set them
A:This part Motorcraft Original Equipment Finewire Single Platinum Spark Plug, Part No. SP459 manufactured by Motorcraft comes preser to a gap of 0.05 in. gap size. But, A spark plug part number might fit hundreds of different engines from many different manufacturers. Although the spark plug from the factory will come with a gap to a pre-selected setting, this may not be the right gap for your particular engine. The incorrect plug gap for your engine can contribute to a high rate of misfires, loss of power, plug fouling, poor fuel economy, and accelerated plug wear. It is always best to check the gap against the manufacturer's specifications. If adjusting the gap on fine wire or precious metal plugs such as platinum or iridium be very careful not to apply any pressure or prying force to the fine wire center electrode or insulator as they can be damaged. The gap should be adjusted by only moving the ground electrode.
Q:If these are worn or otherwise bad, would I see reduced gas milage and rough idling/ operation?? Vehicle is a '97 Ford F-150 5.4L V-8 4X4.
A:If your 1997 Ford F150 spark plugs are bad then your vehicle will rough at idle, misfire and engine will shake. However, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a certified mechanic for a proper diagnosis before buying and having parts installed that may not (solve/be) the problem.
