  • Q:

Without pulling axles, is there a way to know if I have 28 or 30 spline axles? I have a 1985 K1500 6-5.50 lug pattern 10 bolt 3.42 gears.

Great question, I found that up until late 1987 early 1988 GM used 28 spline axle shafts in their 10 bolt rear axles. So your 1985 K series 1/2 ton would have 28 spline axle shafts stock.

  • Q:

What is the different between a 28 spline and 30 spline of a motive differential gear?

      A:

Splines are essentially the "gear teeth" in that mechanical connection. The more splines means more teeth. The axles have a certain number of splines on the end of them, where they connect to the differential in the middle of the rear end housing. Therefore, the differential has to have the same number of splines as the axles in order to make the mechanical connection. Most 28 splines are tapered and most 30 splines are not. The 30 spline shaft should be approximately 30% harder to break than its 28 spline counterpart.
