Q:How do I find the gear ratio on the rear end of a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup
A:The gear ratio is ring gear number count devided by pinion gear number count.
A:There is a metal tag bolted to the outside differential cover. There are two rows of numbers. Look at the lower row. There will be a number that looks like this 3 54 610422-1. The 3 54 portion is the gear ratio if the unit has not been altered. The rest of the number is the Bill Of Material number that can reveal all the details of what parts were used during the original manufacture of the axle.
