Excellent product as always from MOOG, I never buy any other brand when it comes to steering or suspension. Yes they are pricey, but well worth it. Only wish MOOG would have installed it for me - LOL.

Hi Big Al, glad to assist you! The foam washer goes between the center link and the idler arm. The purpose is to prevent dirt from getting into the idler arm bearing.

Does the pitman arm have to be replaced with this idler arm as a set?

                A:

Hi TM, good question! Idler Arms and Pitman Arms are part of your steering system that links your steering box to the center link, and then on to the hub assemblies. The Pitman Arm, also known as the "steering arm," is the main player while the idler arm supports the other side and allows the proper movement to take place when you turn the wheel. If your steering has gotten sloppy they may need replacement. Signs of this are your steering wheel moving 2 inches or more from side to side without turning the wheels at all, front end shimmy that can't be attributed to out-of-balance wheels, or lurches to the left or right when you go over a bump. . However, it is recommended to replace both since if either one is bad the other is on the verge of failure.

How do you know if it needs replacing?
Asked on 3/10/2013 by Johnny from Spring Hill, TN

              1 answer

              • CUSTOMER CARE

                A:

Instructions to check the idler arm: 1. Start the vehicle and set the front wheels to point straight forward. Move to the front of the vehicle and take up a position where you have a clear view of the idler arm assembly. Ask your assistant to rock the steering wheel back and forth, a few inches at a time. 2. Observe the connection at the end of the idler arm, where the shaft is set into the bushing near the wheel. Use the flashlight if necessary. If the shaft of the idler arm moves in any direction, prior to the wheel beginning to turn, the bushing is bad and the idler arm needs to be replaced.
