    National Hub Assembly

Comments about MOOG Hub Assemblies Front Wheel Hub Assembly:

We replaced the original front hub assembly on my 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass station wagon (after 246,000 miles) with this National hub assembly. This job required two to four hours per axle for two amateur mechanics, depending on the difficulty of loosening the axle nut and removing the original gasket from the steering knuckle behind the hub assembly. A hub puller and a set of axle nut sockets are highly recommended. My original axle nut was 35 mm and the replacement was 36 mm, which was not a problem since I had borrowed a set of sockets. We applied PB Blaster to the original axle nut an hour before beginning work. We achieved a torque length of three feet on a manual socket wrench by clamping a wooden axe handle as an extension. A replacement gasket was included but we reused the original O-ring (on the lip of the steering knuckle) as this was not included. We carefully removed the original gasket with a vice grip, cleaned and greased the inside of the steering knuckle, and seated the new gasket and hub assembly in tandem by tightening first the new axle nut, then tightening (in alternation, as lug nuts) the three (reused) bolts that hold the hub assembly to the steering knuckle. This job requires a large dose of pragmatic creativity, and luck helps too. After 500 miles the hub and bearings are performing fine.

Comments about MOOG Hub Assemblies Front Wheel Hub Assembly:

THE BEARINGS WERE NATIONAL & NOT MOOG.I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A RUNNING CHANGEOVER FROM NATIONAL TO MOOG.BEING A TECHNICIAN AND KNOWING THAT NATIONAL IS A VERY QUALITY BEARING THAT DIDN'T BOTHER ME.WHAT CONCERNED ME WAS THAT BOTH SEALS WERE DAMAGED AND COULDN'T BE USED.THE SPARK PLUGS HAD COME OUT OF THEIR BOXES IN SHIPMENT WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED THEM GET CRACKED,BUT THEY WERE OK.WHEN I CONTACTED CUSTOMER CARE ABOUT THE DAMAGED SEALS THEY ASKED DID I WON'T TO RETURN THE BEARINGS,WHICH I THOUGHT MAYBE THEY WOULD HAVE SUGGESTED SENDING NEW SEALS OR FOR ME TO VISIT A LOCAL STORE FOR THE SEALS OR REIMBURSE FOR THE COST OF NEW SEALS.I DIDN'T WANT TO TURN A COUPLE OF HRS.WORK INTO TWO WKS.
