Comments about Monroe Quick-Strut Complete Strut Assembly:

Ok, I think I can explain the reason for the different reviews of this product. First, I have a 1992 Honda Civic DX sedan. Second, I ordered both front shock-absorber assemblies, 171945 and 171946.

In order to install these shock-absorber assemblies, there must be a certain angle between the mounting bolts on top and the "alignment tab". The alignment tab is a metal tooth that is squeezed by the pinch-bolt that you put into the damper fork. If the angle is incorrect, then you cannot simultaenously attach the shock-absorber to the frame *and* fit the damper fork onto it correctly.

It seems to me that these shock-absorber assemblies are assembled somewhat randomly, and the angle is not always correct. My passenger-side assembly had a bad angle, while my driver-side assembly had a (almost) correct angle.

HOWEVER, you can fix this yourself *without any extra tools* and *without disassembling the assembly* by rotating the mounting cap at the top of the shock-absorber assembly. I was not able to do this with my bare hands, but the following worked:
(1) put the assembly in place and fasten the mounting bolts in the engine compartment,
(2) fit the damper fork onto the assembly in the correct position so that the alignment tab is in the "pinching area" (since we are assuming that the angle is wrong, this means that you *cannot* yet reattach the damper fork to the control arm),
(3) now that the assembly is stable and you have the damper fork to grab, grab both arms of the damper fork and twist in the appropriate direction until the desired angle is achieved.

I emphasize that this is a perfectly legitimate solution: if you read the manufacturer instructions carefully, you will find that they indeed say that you will sometimes need to rotate the mounting cap to fit correctly.

Comments about Monroe Quick-Strut Complete Strut Assembly:

I ordered two strut assemblies and both arrived loose in boxes (no packing material), with holes and tears in the boxes. One box had a rattle that the other did not. When I opened it, the spot welded brake line bracket was broken away from the strut. Obviously from being banged around in an unpadded box. Credit to my local Advanced Auto Parts store, they replaced it in one day. Very accommodating.

        Quick strut is not quick.

Comments about Monroe Quick-Strut Complete Strut Assembly:

I ordered the quick strut twice for a honda civic thinking that the first one was assembled incorrectly. The 2 bolts on top of the strut do not line up with the bolt holes in the car and the alignment mark in the strut fork. It REQUIRES a spring compressor to compress the spring and adjust the top shock mount appropriately to align with both mount holes and alignment mark on fork. It would have been much cheaper to just order a new strut and replace damaged hardware. I thought that it would just be simpler and save time to pay extra for the quick strut. what a waste!

Comments about Monroe Quick-Strut Complete Strut Assembly:

The Monroe quick-struts were great. They come in a box, ready to install. I didn't want to deal with the hazard of compressing and decompressing the spring to only replace the strut. In my opinion, the extra cost was worth it to eliminate the chance of me getting injured or worse. I decided to buy these for ease of installation when my boss told me he once broke his thumb when compressing the spring and trying to change out the strut.

          • Q:

I have basically the same question as the previous poster, and the answer was not so reassuring. I know that the product *claims* to be ready-to-install, but there is a 2011 customer review saying otherwise. There are also 2010 and 2012 reviews agreeing with the manufacturer's claim. Do we know the cause of the bad situation? Was it (a) simply a single defective item, (b) some design change that was quickly abandoned, (c) this product was not 100% compatible with this customer's vehicle model, or (d)...? I very much want to know the reason for the bad review before I buy these.

              A:

Based on the earlier negative review I assume the customer might have had a different year's (not 92-95) Honda Civic. This would have resulted on a slight mismatch proceeded by customer's need to compress the spring. The Monroe Quick-Strut Complete Strut Assembly - Part No. 171945 is an exact fit only for 92-95 Honda Civic models and is a complete, ready-to-install replacement strut assembly. Both the people who say it is ready-to-use and the person who says it does not fit are correct, because not every product is assembled identically, but you do *not* need a spring compressor or anything else. See my review of this product, which should be published sometime soon.
