    Comments about Monroe Gas-Matic Strut:

Purchased this product since the rear end was bottoming in the cold weather. Installation was straight forward and fairly easy. Made quite a difference in ride, handling etc. Plus it set back end up to original ride height.

    Comments about Monroe Gas-Matic Strut:

Bought this product as an original replacement part; works perfectly, car is now more controlled. Note that these "struts" do not adjust but allows air to keep ride firm. I recommend this product as an affordable replacement part and safety measure.

Had original shocks that where broken in half, these were the cheapest shocks I could fine. The vehicle handles much better and the ride is quite comfortable. Didn't need the mounts because the original mounts were not in that bad of shape. I probably would go with the same manufacturer for future purchases. Great product for the price I paid. Advance Auto Parts also gives the best prices around with the promo codes when shopping online, so shopping anywhere else is not an option when it comes to buying auto parts.

I have a 1986 Oldsmobile 98 with air ride system. will these shocks work with that system by just connecting the factory air lines to them or will they need to have an outside source connected to them. will I have to disable the leveler controls from the rear?

                        A:

Hi Polar Bear, I'm happy to help you! This Monroe Gas-Matic Strut (Part No. 81798) should fit for your 1986 Oldsmobile 98. The installation is quick and easy, first you have to remove and replace one piece and there is no need to take apart entire assembly. When doing strut replacements, it is important to do the complete job. This means not only replacing the struts but also inspecting and replacing worn strut mounts. Remember, worn strut mounts can adversely affect a vehicle's safety and handling.

Happy to help you with your question Mr Jellyhed! You may want to change your struts if you want to upgrade to a stronger strut, its service interval that is generally 50,000 miles, if you experience nose-dive or harshness, or if they are physically broken. Those would be the general rules to go by when considering changing your struts.

                    • Q:

I have a 1991 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Elite. There is some kind of a hose like line coming from the rear strut, I looked at it a couple of days ago. The line is connected to a nipple of the strut, as you can see the nipple in the picture of a new gas-matic shock. I will need 2 new struts for the rear of my car. My question is, will I hear air or something similar when I disconnect this line? I'm just not sure if these questions are being answered by an expert though. No offense. Because I do see a hose type line coming off my rear struts. I'm just being cautious, and careful, before I replace the struts.

Hello JerseyDrummer, Good question. You may not hear any air escaping when you disconnect the strut. Since the car will be off, the compressor won't be running so you should be o.k. I would recommend that you purchase Part Number: 19020 for the complete instructions for replacing the struts.

Computer operated vents on the air springs in Air suspension , suspension sensors and an onboard air compressor allow the system to maintain ride height and vary the suspension's ride characteristics but this Monroe Gas-Matic Strut with part# 81798 is not adjustable strut. This strut do not raise the vehicle or lower it. So, there would not be a need to connect any line from Air suspension to this strut.

The simpler way to check is look under the car, if there is a solid 3/4" rod extension between the shock tube and the lower eyelet bushing, then you have the Nivomat shocks and if the lower eyelet bushing is welded right to the shock tube, then you have regular shocks.
