What is the expect life of the shock ? Should this take the lound thump out of the rear of the car when going over a rough place in the road?

        A:

I'm happy to help, J! A shock can last many miles depending on the use it receives. Monroe recommends that your shocks and struts are replaced every 50,000 miles. Replacing your shock may help with any thunks from the rear if the shock has completely failed and is not absorbing any irregularities in the road. More likely the thunk will be caused by something else, like a spring or another failed suspension component.

A repair manual for your vehicle may help you in diagnosing the cause of the noise. If you would like assistance diagnosing the cause of the thunk, I suggest trying our 'Need expert help?' link further down this page.
